Ever wanted to edit a webpage to say whatever you wanted it too? So did other people.

The good people at Mosio pinged me yesterday with this awesome tid-bit from their summer intern. Check out how you can modify ANY website in FireFox or Internet Explorer. It is so simple it might blow your mind!

  • Step 1: go to a website you would like to mess around in
  • Step 2: in the address paste this line

javascript:document.body.contentEditable='true'; document.designMode='on'; void 0

  • Step 3: highlight and play with the page as if you were in Microsoft word.
Check out their changes to AskTheAdmin below:

Lets zoom in and check out their changes to AskTheAdmin...

I then went berserk modifying sites... Taking screen shots of modified websites and sending them along. Great tip Jay! Did you guys know about this?

Amazon is Down! - No redundancy while the shopping giant suffers a major outage

That's right kiddies!

Ask The Admin brought it to you first. Don't go knocking on Amazon's door today. Nobody will answer.

Could it be that the Shopping GIANT of the net doesn't even have server redundancy worked out right for itself?

Anybody out there know anything about this? Doesn't Amazon offer hosting services as well?
Hit us in the comments people. Any speculations? DOS Attack?
You tell us...

Hit the comments, aaaaaaand begin!

(Edit they are back up at 3:05pm... Maybe all the Admin's were out to lunch? Almost an hour down that has to cost some serious moolah!)

(Double Edit: 3:14 back down again...)

3:32 When you can get to the site
we have a pretty little note posted...

And now Rumors are flying that it is PS3 related here and here... Anyone?

Make Outlook your biznatch using batch files and customized rules.

love technology asktheadminI have recently fallen in love with having outlook run batch files -depending on what an email from me to me says.

They say necessity is the mother of all inventions and that is certainly true when it comes to scripting. I have been using a WM 6 device with no push email support and popping a pop3 account on the run.

I make sure to offline my outlook before leaving my office. Too Bad The Admin has a horrible short term memory - I would often forget and this would lead to missed messages and angry people in need of support cursing my name.

Now we couldn't have that, so I started looking for an app that would offline outlook for me as I locked my machine. That didn't happen... Not even close.

So I looked into a batch file to shutdown outlook also no go. so I said fuck it and used pskill in a script to terminate the process called outlook as seen here:

taskkill /F /im outlook.exe

Next I went into outlook and created a new rule from scratch. When new messages arrive from a specific account, from specific sender and with the specific subject shutdownoutlook.

Now when I send a email to myself and outlook is open it will process the message see who it is from check the subject and run my script.

Bingo. Emails flowing into my handheld again. so I can do this on the fly. since then I created scripts for restarting my PC, IIS and other apps.

What do you script? Do you automate on a day to day basis?

Anyone know how to make a script run on lock workstation?

DONT BE SHY!! Comment Young Admins!

Use a free Exchange server to sync up your calendar with one person and task list with another.

Hi boys and girls,

Do you remember when Ask The Admin covered a very interesting topic of Free Exchange services? For those who don't, you can look here, here and sometimes here.

In a nutshell, this article talked about how me and my fiance' had to plan our wedding and had tons of appointments flying in from both directions.

In order to get our two phones talking to one another and playing nicely, I used a free Exchange hosting service called www.Mail2Web.com to enable my WinMo PDA and my fiance's Blackjack to sync calendars every 10 minutes logging into the service through ActiveSync, as if they are the same phone. As a result, both phones would have the same calendar information, and keep it that way every ten minutes.

I've had this system going for some time now, and it's been working just fine. I haven't even had to login to the control panel for anything! While figuring out this howto, I noticed in my own phone that WinMo gives you 4 categories of info items to sync, (as illustrated by the image so cleverly placed on the top of this blog) - Contacts, Calendar, Email, and Tasks. I realized that my fiance's BlackJack also had the choice of 4 different points of info to sync. This meant that every WinMo device can choose which information to sync with an ActiveSync Server Source and more importantly, which information NOT to sync with an Exchange Server. So we've established that my fiance's BlackJack and my ATT 8525/Hermes were acting as if they had the same calendar - consider them synced.

So this was a real world problem solved by the fact that 2 people have phones with WinMo and Activesync, and the availability of a free exchange service @ www.Mail2Web.com.
Now onto the next real-world problem: The Admin and I have a lot of tasks involved with keeping our beloved website up and running, current and fresh. Throughout the months tasks have come and gone, but certain tasks fell through the sieve and got replaced by more current, more urgent tasks that took precedence at the time. So basically tasks were getting lost. Since neither of us used the built in Tasks application in WinMo, this presented the perfect opportunity to put my theory to the test.

I know that I already have 2 people logging into MY Mail2Web account to sync calendars. But what would be wrong with 3 people logging into that same account - except that my Fiance' will only sync Calendar information, and The Admin will only sync Tasks information (and NOBODY syncs Contact information).

So I had the The Admin log into my Mail2Web account through his ActiveSync Server Connection and sync only Tasks, and I had my own phone begin to sync Tasks with the same service it was already syncing to for Calendar information, which coincidentally my Fiance's phone was simultaneously syncing Calendar information with as well.

Problem solved:
Me and the Admin with synced Tasklist,
Me and the Fiance with synced Calendar.
Free.
Automatic.
Just the way we like it.

Can I get Vista's fonts for free on XP...Legally?

The guys over at Ghacks are awesome and obviously not just for Google hacks check out this gem...

Today boys and girls we are going to learn how to get Vista's Clear Type fonts for FREE! Just like AtA likes it!

As I said before the guys over at Ghacks helped me out today when I needed to get these Vista-esque fonts for a sales rep on the go. They were using XP and being very adamant about having the clean looking smooth Vista fonts for his presentation. Wait there's more! The presentation was in 10 minutes! ..Gasp..

Sure on a normal day when I had more time I might have gone for one of my Vista install cd's or hit up some of my less reputable search engines. But after a quick google I found the above article pointing me to download the FREE Power Point 2007 Viewer.

I remotely connected to the sales dude's laptop via my single click vnc link. I pushed the small installer on over to his machine. Installed it and just like that... We had Vista fonts! Score.

In case I didn't say Ghacks enough let me say it again... Thanks GHACKS you guys rock.

Access your Tivo's hidden webserver! Download, strip and rip. Part One.

tivo logo unhappy unpluggedAfter figuring out I could edit Blogger blog posts from my mobile I decided to see what I could do with my TiVo while I am away. I went online and did some research. I found this tid-bit from Dave Zatz (Sling Media) and gave it a shot.

Allow me to bring you kids up to speed. Essentially, TiVos are just nicely packaged Linux boxes with TV capture cards, hard drives, and a cutesy visual operating system that everyone has grown to love. It's nice to know the open Linux spirit is in full swing at Tivo, because the developers at Tivo have happily included an already running, https, port 80 web server!

You heard me correctly, I did NOT stutter. As long as you enabled the transfer option from TiVo online you can access a web server built into your Tivo. To do this all you need to do is simply point your browser at your TiVo's local IP address using https://...

The address bar would look like this:

https://192.168.0.3/
I simply entered this address into my browser and it prompted me for a username and password. The username to use is always tivo and the password is your Media Access Key.

Your media access key can be found via your tivo interface or on your TiVo.com account.

Now how can you use this information while you are away?

Point your router to forward port 80 and 443 to your TiVo, Now by typing in your routers external IP address from any where in the world you can download your .TIVO files.

I hear you all saying:

They are encrypted and all Admin what good is that? and How does this help me?

Well these .TIVO files are just MPEG2 files with a shiny restrictive layer of prohibitive crap. But, no worries lets get that file cracked open so you can burn it to DVD or move it around at your own will. TiVo to go lets you do some of this stuff but The Admin hates being restricted to, well, anything.

Lets get you Downloading, Stripping and Ripping... (This is for your own access we are not teaching you to be nor advocating piracy...)

Tune back in for part two of our TiVo - download, strip and rip series tomorrow.

Display a Start Up Message in Windows XP before logging in.

Before someone logs into your machine a message can be displayed. This is meant to inform you that you are being monitored or you are bound by some formal code of conduct.

legal notice ask the admin windows xp
You can use it to display a message in your absence to remind your buddies you are an all knowing Admin. You can do it pretty easily by displaying what Microsoft refers to as a legal notice at system start up.

  • GO TO RUN
  • REGEDIT
  • Navigate to [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies\system]
  • Change legalnoticecaption"="Legal Notice"
  • legalnoticetext="AskTheAdmin is watching you."

obviously you can replace Legal notice or AskTheAdmin is watching you with any text you want. The editors over here are pretty sure you can find some Funny Practical uses for this on your, or a public, PC...

How to add Hibernate as a 4th option in XP's Shut-Down Menu

You might have seen it before on someone else's laptop, and wondered how you can get down with the hibernation game. Why doesn't it show up by default on your shutdown screen?? Don't have hibernation envy!

I'm referring to seeing 4 options to choose from on your Shut Down menu of Windows XP. After this hack the Hibernate option will stay there without the need to press the Shift key any more.

Well- let's get to it:

The first thing to do is get a hold of Microsoft's hotfix KB893056. MS wants you to call its customer support to get it, but instead- you can use this web-form to request it immediately.

After we installed the hotfix, we need to make some small registry changes. Get it here

For those of you working in a Workgroup environment and using the friendly "Welcome Screen" you need to run the Reg-file called: "1 AddToShutdown". If you use the classic logon screen you can also run the 2nd Reg-file to set Hibernate as the default action in the menu.

When you're finished just restart the machine and check it out!

Needless to says that you must have the Hibernate feature on in your Control Panel's Power Options. or else nothing would appear obviously.

Enjoy :-)

How can I view a web page that used to be there but isn't anymore?

Don't you just hate those Four Oh Four errors? This page can not be displayed...

We wont judge you. Whether it be porn or work related. For good or evil...

The page used to be there. But where did it go? Who cares - We are going to show you how to bring it back!

After being overwhelmed with emails, from amazed readers, after we resurrected the website about the torrent tracker infiltration by a security company. Reader after reader sent us emails inquiring about this magic cache and how to access it.

See the black circle around the word cached? Yup that is your time machine. You will get a snapshot of the page the last time Google crawled it.

Hit this trick/feature up after take down notices or the dig effect hit you with a big 404. Its not always 100 percent functional but it will get you the guts of the site.

How long before google gets those take down notices for their cache?

Build A Stand Alone Bit Torrent Computer Out Of An Old PC & Ubuntu

Direct from the website Nerdica (What a name!). Put that old pc you have collecting dust back to work. Crack that whip and build a dedicated BT server that will never use up your precious hard drive space with downloads of the Simpsons and Futurama when you need it for those work files.

Everyone knows you just put your work aside and let your bitTorrents keep downloading. And yes we do know you pretend to be busy while doing it. Your not alone!

And now you can increase your productivity - that is if you want to :) Separate your BitTorrenting activities from your mission critical work!

While most of our time on the Internet is spent IMing, e-mail, or just browsing the Web, you may run in to situations when you need to do some powerful file transfers. If you use a laptop, you’re use to getting up, suspending your laptop, and running out the door all of the time. But, sometimes you know you just need something dedicated to get work done. You’ll need a solution to retrieve files and serve data when you need it. In this guide, you’ll learn how to set a small headless Ubuntu server used to retrieve BitTorrent files, while even saving them to a external USB hard drive that can be disconnected on the go. You even discover how to remotely administer your server from the Web using SSH, VNC, and an intuitive HTML UI, while being able to retrieve files while you’re away from home.

This tutorial takes for granted you have a spare computer laying around. Building a computer is out of the scope of this article. Edit: (But not out of AtA's Realm Hit Us up!!!)

Check out the whole tutorial here. Let us know how that works out for ya...

iPhone productivity Tip for switching between letters and numbers easier!

Writter David Cohen tells us about his new favorite iPhone tip over @ his blog.

Since I got my new iPhone, I’ve read a million stupid tips. Maybe this is another one, or maybe you’ll find this one really nice to have like I do.

Let’s say you want to type “Goober5A” as a user name (no, this is not my user name - I’m making it up - really).

When you get to the 5, you’re probably hitting the little 123 button to switch to number mode, hitting 5, then hitting the button to switch back to alpha mode. Quit doing that. Instead, hold down the 123 button, slide your finger to the 5, then let go. Magic. Genius.

iPhone NES Emulator re-released uber fast.(With Instructions! at the bottom!)

We heard about the NES emulator yesterday for the iPhone and ran to retrieve one of my execs "toys" to umm update it... Yeah that's right Update it. I jumped through some hoops and got it all loaded up and then to my dismay it was slow as crap. I un-installed everything and gave it back disappointed. But then this morning I read the following article (now I need to retrieve the phone again to give this a shot! Zelda here I come:

So what happens when someone releases a functional but extremely slow NES emulator? Two of the finest iPhone hackers spend all night re-writing the thing to make it blazing fast and include multi-touch support. Behold the optimized NES App created by NerveGas with help from NightWatch/Patrick Walton. You can download and run the app today and the source will shortly be rolled into the official SVN. iPhone NES: the game for big hearts and small thumbs.
Thanks to Bricolage and NerveGas [Tuaw]

Update: The NES App has been getting updates all day. To keep on top of the updates, check out Nate True's iPhone archive, which is where new updates will appear.

AtA Update: Got it working - totally playable multi touch is slow but bearable... I will see if i can get some video up. Stay tuned to this post for more! Check back!!

Hack Attack July's Month End iPhone RoundUp - Unlocking, 3rd party apps, using it as an wireless modem - Plus lots more!

Here is your askTheAdmin roundup of new iPhone information gathered just for you. Well maybe not just you but all of our loyal readers and the n00bs stumbling by! Grab your information goodness and leave us a comment or question. Well here is what you were looking for...

  • Engadget - Has a wonderful post on using your iPhone as a EDGE modem for your laptop.
Edit- This would be a lot sweeter if the damn thing came with fu%@&$! 3g like it should have!
The latest hack installs a new SOCKS server on your iPhone. Join your iPhone and laptop to the same ad-hoc WiFi network and you're pretty much good to go.
  • Gizmodo Has an article on using your iPhone as a web server - running python apps and just being 1337.
  • Macworld tells us about Sleep mode on your iPhone and how it can help save your battery life.
We’ve received a few questions about the iPhone’s sleep mode; specifically, how it compares to actually shutting down the phone. Here’s the 411:

When you shut down—by holding down the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds and then swiping the red slider control that appears—the iPhone is completely turned off. This is akin to using your Mac’s Shut Down command. (In fact, when you turn on the iPhone again, you’ll see the Apple logo on the screen as the phone boots up.) None of the iPhone’s functions work while shut down, and incoming calls are sent directly to voicemail.

When you “sleep” the iPhone—by pressing the Sleep/Wake button briefly—the screen is turned off and locked (meaning it won’t respond to touches), but the iPhone is still turned on; you can still receive calls and text (SMS) messages, and if you’ve got Mail set to automatically check for new email, it will continue to do so.

  • Gizmodo has the scoop on the iPhone Errors in the wild. Didn't Apple not want to release any thing that could effect the integrity of the iPhone? Well it looks like they shot themselves in the foot.
  • Iphone almost SIM Unlocked by the masterminds of iphone dev wiki (edit: Link removed upon request of the Wiki Admins)

  • We have a new tool for jailbreak/activation called iActivator. It's a nice end-user Mac GUI which re-implements previous exploits into one convenient application.
  • See http://iphone.fiveforty.net/wiki/index.php/IActivator for further details
  • We have a new build system for the toolchain which should make your life easier to compile it.
  • See http://iphone.fiveforty.net/wiki/index.php/Toolchain_Project for further details
  • We have confirmation of the existence of some attempt counter for the unlock:
  • with no unlock attempts +XLOCK returns: "PN",1,0,"PU",5,0,"PP",5,0,"PC",5,0,"PS",5,0
  • with unlock attempts +XLOCK returns: "PN",3,0,"PU",5,0,"PP",5,0,"PC",5,0,"PS",5,0
  • The unlock handler dies if the first number is >1 but we're still not sure of its exact meaning and how it is set due to some odd behaviour we observed.
  • Currently the semantic is believed to be:
  • 0=Unknown, 1=Default/Locked, 2=Unknown, 3=Unknown (has to do with attempts), 4=Lockable, 5=Unlocked
  • The people of #iphone-shell, particularly NerveGas, have been using Nightwatch's toolchain to build open source tools. These include a working apache installation, python, a growing binary kit including routing tools, vim, curl, and much more. They have binaries posted here

  • IpodJuice will offer battery replacement for only $45

The batteries offer the same 1400 mAh, 3.7-volt specifications as Apple’s OEM version. Not only that, ipodjuice guarantees their replacement batteries for ten years from the date of purchase. The company also claims that they’ll replace the battery on the same day they receive your iPhone and get it shipped back out later on the same business day.

Keep in mind that the $45 price does not include shipping the iPhone to ipodjuice. They do offer an option which includes shipping to and from their service center, but that total fee is $65. [TechnaBob]

iPhone Hack: iPhone MMS workaround covered on your data plan.

A common complaint we have heard about the iPhone is that it does not support
MMS. Or does it? Afterall, MMS is basically just glorified email
aliasing.

Email? Now that’s something the iPhone can do!

Since you can email pictures you have taken, to send a picture to any cellphone just email it to the recipient’s MMS email address. All you will need to do is enter the recipients 10 digit number into the appropriate carrier field.

iPhone Hack: Field Test Mode and all sort of useless information!

Boys and Girls Thank The Gizmodo:

Richard Baguley, chief cellular ninja over at WirelessInfo.com, just
published a number that, when called, turns your iPhone into a mobile field testing
station. Suddenly, up pops a new menu (as you can see on our own iPhone at left)
that provides detailed reporting on strengths and characteristics of the cell
towers in your area, plus a load of other nerdy networky factoids. In other
words, you can see things that AT&T might not want you to
see.

What's cool is that you can even enter field test mode during a
call just by tapping the iPhone's "Add Call" icon, then the field test number.
But before I give you this magic number, it is my duty to share Richard's
warning.

NOTE: Although it seems that most of the information is read-only
(so you can't change anything), field modes like this have the potential to
damage your phone and possibly interfere with the phone network. We are
providing this information as-is; we cannot be held responsible if anything you
do in this field mode damages your phone or the phone network.

There, now that the warning is out of the way, here you
go:

*3001#12345#*

Dial that, and have fun fiddling. If you do discover anything
freaky, please report back to us, and, of course, to Richard. If you whack out
your iPhone in the process, don't come crying to me

Every time i restart my WM6 dash i see this. I didn't have it before I upgraded. What is it and make it go away!

This is an easy one Dan! First make sure your device is Application Unlocked. Then install CeleTask and view processes now kill the two or three that hav fav5 in them.

Now you can remove them from startup with Total Commander. Remove everything that mentions fav in it and I got rid of a bunch of other stuff as well.

I know this will help Dan - For some reason the answer is no where to be found on the net!

Hack Attack: iPhone Root Password Revealed + SIM Removal...

If you are just getting here click below

Whaaaaaaaaaaaa? Hell Yeah we have root access to the new iPhone. Does "ALPINE" mean anything to you?

How about you Mr. Jobs?

Yup that is the offical root password grabbed from the password hashes off of http://www.hackintosh.org

How long until we see a hello world. I wonder if this is going to be a sony-esque battle or will Apple let the masses hack the device. Only time will tell...

Check out this quick article from a msdn blog. I love it!!

Here is the instructions for sim removal from howardforums

Removing the SIM card

"Insert the end of a small paper clip into the hole on the
SIM tray. Press firmly and push it straight in until the tray pops out."

And Here is the whole "Consolidated Post" From Hackint0sh.org with
the juicy parts from the howard forums posts as well. It looks like the iPhone is not "Locked" to the sim it was activated with as an ATT employee swaped out a malfunctioning one with a new one.

We also now know after the phone is activated you can remove the sim and use the majority of its features.

Official,
Consolidated iPhone Hack Unlock Thread

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have been bouncing around the internet, and here is some consolidated
info about unlocking/hacking the iPhone. Someone should start a skypecast. You
need skype and a windows box to host one.

Consolidated iPhone Hacking
Info:

Removing the SIM card from
http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=1191069:

Alright, I did some swapping this morning, and
below is what I have found out. In summary, the iPhone SIM, once activated seems
to work fine in unlocked and newer and older AT&T/Cingular phones that are
locked. Other AT&T/Cingular SIM cards will not work until activated with
iPhone plans. They connect, can't dial. iTunes will let you activated it. Non
AT&T/Cingular SIM cards will not work at all.*

So, this phone has
almost a double-lock on it. You have your standard GSM subsidy lock, but you
also have some sort of mechanism that is tying the SIM card to the phone. This
latter one I'm sure someone will figure out how to work around soon.*

Phones:
iPhone (activated) 8gb Locked to AT&T/Cingular

Yes = Works*
No = Does Not Work

NO - Cingular 64k "Smartchip" Sim -

me use phone features, just fails when trying to dial. It does connect to
AT&T.
NO - Vondafone UK SIM - "Incorrect SIM, The iPhone must be used
with an approved SIM" This is a different message than using another
CINGULAR/ATT Sim. This is the GSM "lock"

From Mac Rumors:

All current claims to people owning an unlocked iPhone are false. To
this date no one I am aware of has successfully unlocked an iPhone. I purchased
an iPhone at 6 yesterday with the sole purpose of unlocking it. I have T-Mobile
and have zero intention of switching to AT&T. So, I'm looking for the
community who is currently trying to unlock it. I was involved in the
uncrippling the V710 project and was impressed by the people I met.

I'm
hoping we could get a sticky thread going with all the current progress made.
Maybe this thread :-)

Here is the progress I have made so far. My friend
purchased an iPhone as well yesterday and let me run a USB sniffer while he was
activating it. Here is that log. You can view it with SnoopyPro. Currently, I
cannot even get my iPhone off the main screen saying I need to activate it. That
is the first step towards an unlock. I'm surprised no one has really started
hacking it yet; where are the firmware dumps, does it have seems, where is the
unlocked status stored? Post whatever you can find out. My sn is "imgeohot". If
this community is as good as the V710 community, we can have this thing unlocked
in a week.

The iPhone is an amazing device, let's bring it to the
AT&T free masses. I am looking for the "they" people claim will unlock the
iPhone and actually will work on it.

This is a crosspost from HoFo

From hackint0sh:

I've got my iPhone, it's activated, and I've
been doing some rudimentary analysis of what's going on with it. I doubt I'll be
able to accomplish the Holy Grail myself - loading 3rd party apps to do whatever
you want (portable gaming platform ahoy!) But I bought my iPhone in the hopes
that it'll eventually happen, and I'd like to help the hacking community get to
that point however I can.

Here's what I've found so far.

When
you update iTunes to 7.3, a PrivateFramework called MobileDevice.framework gets
installed in /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks. Four applications are inside it,
aside from the library binary itself: AppleMobileDeviceHelper.app,
AppleMobileSync.app, reenumerate, and usbmuxd. These applications, from a
cursory analysis (i.e. strings :P), seem to have tons of debugging info left in
them.

When I sync my iPhone, iTunes throws this into the Console:

Created child with pid 788...
Starting child at
/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/MobileDevice.framework/Resources/
AppleMobileDeviceHelper.app/Contents/MacOS/AppleMobileDeviceHelper, setting
input fd to 27, output fd to 33 and closing all other pipes
Created args
array of size 5
Child
/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/MobileDevice.framework/Resources/
AppleMobileDeviceHelper.app/Contents/MacOS/AppleMobileDeviceHelper starting up,
argc is 4...
arg[0] =
/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/MobileDevice.framework/Resources/
AppleMobileDeviceHelper.app/Contents/MacOS/AppleMobileDeviceHelper
arg[1] =
--pipe
arg[2] = 27
arg[3] = 33
Created child to sync device with pid
789...
Waiter has started running...
Created unique process name from
name AppleMobileSync, process name AppleMobileSync:
AppleMobileSync.FD62FB24-08FA-4FD6-B7FC-6566D9F5229D

So in order to mess
with the iPhone, iTunes calls "AppleMobileDeviceHelper --pipe [input pipe]
[output pipe]", which I assume to just be plain old unix file descriptors.
Someone should sniff the data running over those pipes to get started.

-Hi
I did a port scan and found something running on port 62078

Don't know what it is, and when ever you connect, it cuts the connection
right away.

Any ideas?

-We managed to obtain and crack the hashs
of the user passwords for the iPhone OS. More information could be found at our
development Wiki here (link removed).

Edit: cause you digg people broke
the poor wiki:

The password for root is "alpine"
The "mobile" user
accounts password is "dottie"

Is it sick to have root pasword to all
iPhones worldwide? Well not really, there is no terminal yet to login :P

-FWIW - I can also confirm that the iPhone is not an any way locked to
the SIM it is shipped with prior to activation.

I was having activation
issues, and after numerous phone calls and trips to ATT store, they finally
swapped out the SIM (which fixed the problem).

iPhone Restore image
download:

This ipsw file is actually a zip file. Rename it .zip and
unarchive. You will get two disk images, a system software dmg and a user dmg
(from what I can tell). The system software dmg is password protected

There are also a few files compressed using the compzlss thing as on
AppleTV.

Happy Hacking!!!!

Just to note, I couldn't download it
in Safari, but "curl -O http://..." worked for me.

Tmobile Wing Crippled By Tmobile??

HAPPY FRIDAY BOYZ AND GIRLS!
So Windows Mobile 6 Professional says it comes with a remote desktop client but where is it on this new device from Tmobile?

I went looking for it today to access one of my servers on the fly and guess what - It ain't there! I called Tmobile on it and they said it does not come with Mobile 6 pro - according to Microsoft here .

Tmobile then went on to tell me it is a feature that most WM6 devices will not have it as it costs money for an additional licence. I don't get it! WM5 had it no problem even its predecessor had it... I can't buy it, download it, or even find it!

Another issue I noticed with this WM6 device is I can not change ANY system files on the device. I can not replace the TMOBILE home page that comes up as part of IE. I can not change other templates. I tried from the phone, from Activesync, and a few other ways that I was sure was going to work.

Anyone know a way around either of these issues? And how about a way to SIM unlock it while you are at it?

Post em in the comments or send them to info at asktheadmin dot com.

It must be Defrag Day: Why Not Script it?

I wrote this a little while back, but since the theme today seems to be based on defragmentation, I thought, why not re-post this here.

Anybody who is anybody knows that the built in Windows defrag utility stinks. It is very hard to schedule defrag and have it work correctly. The problem with that is that if you don't automate it, it will likely never get done, then you will start to see a lag in performance.

For those of you not "in the know", the reason defragging your hard drive is a good idea is because of the way Windows writes data to the hard drive. Windows doesn't write your word document in one continuous chunk on the hard drive. It breaks it up and puts the pieces where there is open space all over your drive. Over time, these fragments get out of control, and it takes the computer longer to find all of the pieces. It's kind of like your desk at work, with all sorts of papers strewn about. The defrag utility moves all of the pieces so they are back together again.

Now back to automation. There are lots of third part utilities out there for scheduling a defrag, and most of them cost money. The one I am going to talk about is a command line utility called DIRMS. Now, like some freeware products, DIRMS is no longer free, and comes only as trial ware. Once again, Bauer-Power to the rescue! I have the old free version available HERE. I have also included the script I wrote that will let you execute it without having to know much about running things from the command line. Just save it to the root of your C: drive (If you have a different letter, edit the batch file using notepad to use that letter).

The coolest part, is that since it is so easy to write a batch script for running it, it is even easier to automate. You can set the batch script to run as a scheduled task in windows. If you don't already know how to do that, click on Start> All Programs> Accessories> system Tools> Scheduled Tasks> Click on the Add Scheduled Task icon and follow the wizard. When it prompts you for which file to run, browse to the batch file, select it, and click OK.

I use it all the time, and it works great. I recommend setting it for a time when you aren't going to be using the computer, like sometime between midnight and when you wakeup (Yes, your computer has to be on to run it! I don't know how many times I have had users ask me if it okay to turn their computers off when they go home when I have set something to run after they leave. If you turn off your computer the scheduled task will not run. Simple as that!)

Once again, you can download it HERE.

Resetting a Cisco 2600 Series Router PW - Physical Access Needed

I read this article via Digg @ Bauer-Power.Net and I really liked it. So here it is for your perusal. I have had to use this technique on more than one occasion and had to pull it off of Cisco's cryptic website but here it is:

"Have you ever heard the expression, "If you have physical access to a machine on the network, you can own that machine." I have, one of my professors at school harps on that all the time. I knew what he was talking about as far as Windows machines. I mean there are tons of free utilities you can use to reset the administrator's password in Windows. There are an equal number for Linux I'm sure, but what about a router? I'm not talking about a cheap D-Link router that you use at home, I am talking about production grade Cisco routers. Resetting the privileged mode password is really a simple process. In class tonight, we had a lab where we had to do password recovery on a Cisco 2600 series router. The process was really simple.

First of all, in order to reset the password you have to be physically connected to the console port, so forget the notion of telnetting in and "Hacking the Gibson."Now that you have picked the lock to get into the server room where the routers are, or if you are a network admin and you genuinely have access to the server room, you can hook up your laptop directly to the router's console port. With something like hyperterminal, make sure you have connectivity with the router (Check with Cisco's website for the hyperterminal settings). Now that you have a good connection, power off the router, then power it back on. After you turn it back on you have 60 seconds to press ctrl+break. Keep it held down until you see

rommon 1>.At rommon 1> type confreg 0x2142 the press enter.
At rommon 2> type reset.

Now the router will reboot and will now skip the startup configuration and you will now be prompted to go through router setup. When prompted, select no. We don't want to reconfigure the router, we only want to reset the password.

Now you should be at a prompt like this:

router>, type enable and press enter.

You should now be at a prompt like this: router#.

Type enable and your new password then press enter.

You should also reset the secret password by typing enable secret and the new secret password. Now with the passwords reset, save your changes by typing copy running-config startup-config and press enter. Now type config-register 0x2102 and press enter. Type reload at the prompt and the router will now be rebooted with your new password. Congratulations! You now own the box! Please keep in mind that this is for a Cisco 2600 series router. For the full step by step instructions for this or any other Cisco product, visit Cisco.com and do a search for password recovery."
