MJ writes to us that her machine runs updates around lunch time and she keeps getting the prompt do you want to restart now?

Not only is it annoying – sometimes she clicks yes by accident and her whole world comes crashing down. (See the fix for this at the bottom of the post – not for the faint of heart or slow typers!!!)

Not only will we show you how to disable the automatic restart option after updates via Group Policy we will show you how to quickly cancel a reboot.

Go to Start –> Run, type “gpedit.msc”.

Go to Computer Configuration –> Administrative Templates –> Windows Components –> Windows Update.

Look for option “No Auto Restart For Scheduled Automatic Update installation” and Enable that option.

This will make sure that your computer is not rebooted automatically, instead it will just notify you for a reboot. It will be users choice as to when to reboot your computer

If in case you want it to notify you again and again, after a specific interval of time, then look for option “Re-prompt for restart with scheduled installations”. Enable that option and specify the time.

Everything above is all easy, its just editing some policies which you can perform easily. [TechiesDen]

Now to cancel a reboot:

Start

Run

Type Shutdown -a and hit enter

Thats it, that will cancel your impending doom if you hit it fast enough!

Now that I have jumped deep into the pool that is Apple I have discovered some tricks that those fan boys don’t want you to know.

I am going to combine two of them into one tip for you out there in AtA land.

The two tricks are - reading ANY MAC disk on your PC or from within BootCamp. And the other is to use Mac’s fancy smancy ultra insecure target disk mode to turn a MAC of your choosing into nothing more than a glorified firewire drive sans security!

NO SECURITY! What was Jobsy thinking?

You may or may not know that while booting up your Mac OS X machine if you hold down the T key as in ‘Target Disk Mode’ you will boot up to a large firewire logo. You are now in target disk mode.

This is made so you can connect another MAC and seamlessly transfer gobs of information from the two of them.

The MAC that is in target disk mode shows up as a volume on your mac. Now if you have a firewire port and a buddy’s your womans and your own Mac Book you can try this at home. We know you are dying to see if you can access its files after you throw it into target disk mode, plug her into your PC and keep on rolling.

I’ll wait while you go try it out!

Normally it would not because the HFS disk is not readable by a PC… Sorry for being a spoil sport but who told you to stop reading :)

At least it does not see it by default.

Going way back there is MacDrive . It lets you view MAC volumes on your PC and this works great with target disk mode and a PC but it costs about $40 and that just sucks! But after doing my due diligence I found HFSX Viewer which lets you do the same thing (kinda) currently it only allows to read and copy and not modify but hey if you are going into steal data snoop around recover files than your all good. And it is FREE!

Don’t worry we won’t tell… Unless they bribe us that is! I have one more use for this HFSXplorer - use it on a PC to view/copy files from you iPod! Now if it could only write…

Hmm Maybe MacDisk is an alternative after all! (Must… Kick… BitTorrent… addiction!!)

As you might have read on AtA, Windows Home Server (WHS) is Awesome.

WHS backs up all the machines on my network for me, gives me a central location to store all my files (MP3′s, Photo’s, etc) with redundancy in case a drive fails, gives me remote access to my files, and is able to do so much more…

But it can’t do everything. The OS partition for WHS is small and to get your application to start after WHS boots you need to either log on to the server and start it or get it to run as a service. Neither of which is a perfect solution if you want to do something automatically.

For example, I wanted to download podcasts to my podcast folder on my WHS. I could have just installed HappyFish, my current rss aggregator, to the WHS and let it do the work but if the server rebooted I wouldn’t always know I needed to remote in to the WHS and re-launch HappyFish, and I had other programs I wanted to run as well. What to do?

As it turns out WHS is based on the Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2003 supports Virtual Server 2005, therefore Windows Virtual Server 2005 will run on Windows Home Server. Whew, type ‘Windows’ much…

Using Windows Virtual PC on a local machine, I created a virtual Windows XP Machine and did all the current Windows Updates and installed HappyFish. Doing this locally was easier for me since I installed the OS using my local DVD drive and my local machine has a faster processor than my WHS but you can potentially install from within VS2005.

Next you will need to:

Install VS2005 on your Windows Home Server. I kept the suggested port of 1024

Create share for virtual machines on your Windows Home Server ( ex. \\whs\virtualMachines ) and copy the virtual image files to a folder there.

Launch your browser (Only IE supports running the virutal images from the browser) and head over to the Virtual Server web interface. http://whs:1024 for me.

Next add your new virtual machine under Virtual Machines by clicking Add and supply the path to your share with the virtual machine image you created. \\whs\VirtualMachineImages\WindowsXPPro\WinXP.vmc for me.

Now you can configure the virtual machine by choosing Configure under Virtual Machines and selecting the virtual machine. Since the server will need to be restarted occasionally I decided to have the virtual machine always automatically start when the server starts and save state and keep undo disks on shut down. These settings are under ‘General Properties’. To automatically start the virtual machine you need to supply user credentials for an account on the WHS that will have access to the virtual machine files. I chose to use the administrator account.

Next you need to add a network. Under ‘Network Adapters’ choose the External Network with the name of the adapter in the Windows Home Server. This will give your virtual machine a virtual network adapter and connect it to your LAN through the physical adapter in the WHS.

I Setup my virtual machine to set it’s own IP Statically. Depending on your LAN setup and how you hand out IP’s you may need to make some changes to get your new virtual machine an IP.

You will see that VS2005 warns that SSL security is not enabled. As long as you are not opening up your VS2005 ports to the outside you can ignore this warning as the only unencrypted data is staying within your LAN.

Depending on how you plan to manage your virtual machines you may not need to open up these ports. Since my image is an XP Pro image I turned on Remote Access and I can use Remote Desktop Connection to gain access to the virtual machine. I also installed the connector software ( but turned off backups ) and can use the WHS login page to remote to this machine from anywhere just like any other machine on my LAN via the WHS web front end.

If I need to access the VS2005 page from the outside I can Remote to any machine and use a browser from that machine.

After this little bit of work you now have a machine on your LAN with access to your WHS shares that is on all the time. It’s even green since you are utilizing a machine that is on all the time already without having to to add another machine with a power supply .

HP has sent us a sneak peak as to what is coming up for next year. Stay tuned for the exciting details over the next few weeks. And if you have any WHS work-a-rounds or hacks… WE WANT TO KNOW! That is what the comments are for.

After downloading and installing ImgBurn, a wizard will offer a few choices.

The one you want to choose is Create image file from disc.

Before we start ripping, we need to prevent ImgBurn from splitting the file into multiple parts since we want to end up with a single ISO file of the entire disc. Go to Tools > Settings and click on the Read tab. Under options, change the value of File Splitting from Auto to None. Click OK to go back to the main screen.

The main screen shows everything you would want to know about this disc. Under Destination, click the folder and navigate to a location where you want to store the image file. Be sure you have enough space. Look in the window on the right, the value for Size is how many bytes the disc contains (this disc is 4.6 Gigs).

When you are ready, click the button at the bottom with the green arrow. The ripping process will begin and the screen will give you a progress indicator including the estimated time remaining.

Go do something else while this runs, it’s going to take a while. A dual layer disc can hold more than 8 Gigs and you should rip at the lowest speed you can bear for best results.

When it’s done you will have a file called ‘Name of the disc’ .ISO.

Now, start VLC player and select Open > File. Navigate to the ISO file and select it. VLC player will start playing the file and the result will appear just like you were playing the physical disc.

Now you can enjoy the full quality and functionality of the DVD without having to lug around all those discs.

ImgBurn is a very powerful piece of software that does a lot of other things, including burning image files to disc, and it is completely FREE (I know the Admin loves free). It runs on all versions of Windows, including Vista and all 64-bit versions of Windows.

One thing ImgBurn will NOT do is rip encrypted discs (discs with CSS and/or Macrovision). For that task you need a tool called DVD Decrypter. The developer of DVD Decrypter is no longer working on the software due to issues with the Macrovision corporation and the obvious DMCA violations the product allows. It wouldn’t be proper to advise you on how to rip protected material or commit DMCA violations, but if you do happen to obtain a copy of DVD Decrypter, you will see that its interface and operation is very similar to that of ImgBurn.
I copped this guy from ATT and got my wife The HTC Diamond from Sprint. (More on this later…)

So I have been loving the new device in all its shinny shinny glory. I have beaten Teeter already and have made use of the Fuze’s functions to the best of my ability. When the device stopped sending ANY emails I was at a loss.

You see if my device does not send emails it really is more of a problem than anything else. Messages come in and I reply and then my message hangs out in my outbox indefinitely. NOT COOL. So now I have to call or text the person and first explain why I am not replying via email…

I hard resetted the device on the fly pulled my data back from my exchange server and was golden for another few days… When it happened again I was beyond myself.

I went’a Googling and surprise surprise other people were having the same damn issue! And Microsoft has released a patch in the form of a MSI or CAB file which you can grab here. I installed it, my device rebooted and all my messages flew out of the inbox.

I hate problems… But I love finding the solution!

Stay tuned for Diamond and Fuze applications, tricks and downloads coming soon. Anyone else have one of these guys? What have you loaded on it? Are you loving TouchFlo3D?

Did you know you can wipe a lost or stolen Windows Mobile device if you configure it before hand? As an Administrator using Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 (SP2), you now have tools with which to set and enforce your mobile device security policies. You can also control some of the features on the mobile devices by using provisioning tools. Check this out:

Excessive failed logon attempts may signal that a wireless device has been lost or stolen — a serious security risk. Find out how to configure your Windows Mobile 5 and 6 devices for local wiping, so they automatically destroy their data after a specified number of failed logons.

Most security policies for Windows Mobile devices are what I call “scorched-earth” policies. Essentially, an Exchange administrator remote wipes a mobile device to mitigate a specific security risk, such as a lost or stolen device. All Exchange Server data is completely erased when a wireless device is “wiped clean.”

You can trigger a remote wipe of a mobile device through Exchange Server 2007 and Outlook Web Access (OWA) 2007, but that presumes the wireless device will contact the Exchange server at some point.

It makes sense to allow mobile devices to wipe themselves when certain prerequisite conditions are met, such as a specified number of failed personal identification number (PIN) entries or incorrect password attempts. This mobile security feature is called a local wipe.

Windows Mobile 5 and 6 devices have provisions for performing local wipes. However, this setting is not enabled by default, and for good reason. Discovering that your Windows Mobile device has committed digital suicide after you messed up your fifth attempt to punch in your PIN can be aggravating — especially if you didn’t know such a policy was in place to begin with.

But if your organization wants to implement this additional layer of security around Windows Mobile devices, it can be done — with a little work.

* First, the Password Required Policy (security policy ID 4131), a Windows Mobile security policy setting, must be enabled for the device in question.

* Next, a registry entry has to be set on the mobile device to enable this feature. In HKLM\Comm\Security\Policy\LASSD, create the decimal key DeviceWipeThreshold and set it to any positive number. This number will be the number of incorrect password logon attempts to allow before the device’s memory is wiped. This setting is also available in the Device Security Settings dialog box in the Exchange Management Console.

NOTE: In Windows Mobile 4, this function did not erase any external memory on the device, such as an SD card or other plug-in memory device. However, Windows Mobile 6 devices will erase external memory cards as well.

We have showed you work-a-rounds but, I can not stand in the way of innovation. So when I over heard a conversation between two VP’s in the hall outside of my dungeon I got involved…

“I would go to office 2007 so we can get this to work but my phone just won’t open the new formats. “

“Why don’t you ask Karl to take a look at it.”

“Nah, it’s o.k.”

That was strange. Are they trying to blame their holdup on IT? I walked over and said “I can make your phone open those extensions. Give me your phone and I will bring it back to you when I come to upgrade your Office to 2007.

He looked surprised but handed me the phone and walked away.

Long story short I downloaded a patch installed office and I was the hero of the day. I can’t wait to hear what they have to say at our board meeting today…

“The big project that was being held up by in-compatibility and inter-operable issues has been resolved in ten minutes by our resident Tech Genius…”

I know I’m dreaming it wil be more like “IT fixed the snags it had that was holding everything up. Let’s think ahead next time…”

Apparently Microsoft realizes how hard the push for the new 2007 document types is going to be and seemingly released a free upgrade for Windows Mobile Devices with any installed office applications on it. It will allow for all the file types to be opened and edited on your hand held. Long story short here is the…

Free Download

From Microsoft’s Website:

What’s new in Office Mobile 6.1? The ability to view Office 2007 documents. (eg. pptx, xlsx, docx). Other improvements include:

• Enhanced viewing experience for charts in Excel Mobile.
• Ability to view SmartArt in PowerPoint Mobile.
• Ability to view and extract files from compressed (.zip) folders.

Microsoft Office 2007 introduced new Open XML-based file formats for Office applications. These new file formats reduce file size, improve security and reliability, and enhance integration with external sources.

To allow Windows Mobile users to work with Office documents created in the Open XML formats, Microsoft has developed an upgrade for Word Mobile, Excel Mobile, and PowerPoint Mobile applications. This upgrade to the Office Mobile applications allows viewing and editing of Word documents and Excel workbooks and viewing of PowerPoint slideshows created by using Microsoft Office 2007.

If your Windows Mobile device does not have a version of Microsoft Office Mobile prior to 6.1, you can purchase the full version of Microsoft Office Mobile.

The Office Mobile application suite includes Microsoft Office Word Mobile, Excel Mobile, and Microsoft Office PowerPoint® Mobile for Windows Mobile 6 powered devices, helping users manage and review documents. Microsoft Office Mobile includes support for rich reviewing and minor editing capabilities as well as support for rights-managed documents.

The primary user scenario enabled by Office Mobile is viewing e-mail attachments, performing minor edits, sharing document versions, and opening documents from an SD card or a SharePoint server. Office Mobile provides a high-fidelity document viewing experience, with capability to edit as well as fast performance in loading the first page of the document.

Note: This free upgrade works only for Windows Mobile powered devices that have an earlier version of Office Mobile. If your Windows Mobile powered device does not have Office Mobile applications, this upgrade will not work for you. You can purchase the full version of Office Mobile 6.1 online.
So while I am on the prowl for the Windows 6.1 update for my Dopod C730 this is how get my compatibility on with the newer file types that all the kiddies are jumping into this days. Anyone got a Windows Mobile 6.1 Update Rom for me and my Dopod??

Do you remember when Ask The Admin covered a very interesting topic of Free Exchange services? For those who don’t, you can look here, here and sometimes here.

In a nutshell, this article talked about how me and my fiance’ had to plan our wedding and had tons of appointments flying in from both directions.

In order to get our two phones talking to one another and playing nicely, I used a free Exchange hosting service called www.Mail2Web.com to enable my WinMo PDA and my fiance’s Blackjack to sync calendars every 10 minutes logging into the service through ActiveSync, as if they are the same phone. As a result, both phones would have the same calendar information, and keep it that way every ten minutes.

I’ve had this system going for some time now, and it’s been working just fine. I haven’t even had to login to the control panel for anything! While figuring out this howto, I noticed in my own phone that WinMo gives you 4 categories of info items to sync, (as illustrated by the image so cleverly placed on the top of this blog) – Contacts, Calendar, Email, and Tasks. I realized that my fiance’s BlackJack also had the choice of 4 different points of info to sync. This meant that every WinMo device can choose which information to sync with an ActiveSync Server Source and more importantly, which information NOT to sync with an Exchange Server. So we’ve established that my fiance’s BlackJack and my ATT 8525/Hermes were acting as if they had the same calendar – consider them synced.

So this was a real world problem solved by the fact that 2 people have phones with WinMo and Activesync, and the availability of a free exchange service @ www.Mail2Web.com.
Now onto the next real-world problem: The Admin and I have a lot of tasks involved with keeping our beloved website up and running, current and fresh. Throughout the months tasks have come and gone, but certain tasks fell through the sieve and got replaced by more current, more urgent tasks that took precedence at the time. So basically tasks were getting lost. Since neither of us used the built in Tasks application in WinMo, this presented the perfect opportunity to put my theory to the test.

I know that I already have 2 people logging into MY Mail2Web account to sync calendars. But what would be wrong with 3 people logging into that same account – except that my Fiance’ will only sync Calendar information, and The Admin will only sync Tasks information (and NOBODY syncs Contact information).

So I had the The Admin log into my Mail2Web account through his ActiveSync Server Connection and sync only Tasks, and I had my own phone begin to sync Tasks with the same service it was already syncing to for Calendar information, which coincidentally my Fiance’s phone was simultaneously syncing Calendar information with as well.

Problem solved:
Me and the Admin with synced Tasklist,
Me and the Fiance with synced Calendar.
Free.
Automatic.
Just the way we like it.

Optimum online and their high speed internet tubes have shut me down today at 10:11am in mid page refresh and it drove me crazy. I reset my modem, router, laptop and everything in between. I grabbed my bill to make sure I didnt miss a payment and then I called them on it.

I got the whole sorry sir it just happened so we won’t know if their is a service outage for some time… blah… blah…blah. Someone will call you back to come to your site at some point today.

Arrrrrg.

So what better time to do a Internet connection sharing comparison between 2 networks via the Dash WM6 Smartphone on ATT vs the Wing WM6 on Tmobile.

I saw faster speeds more consistantly on ATT but they also dipped below 30kbps several times where Tmobile stayed over 29kbps at all times. (ATT seems to handle my requests better though!)

Tmobile Max 76kbps Minimum 29kbps
Att Max 119kbps Minimum 17kbps

They both let me get on and post but it is still sub standard pre 1995 modem speed. I tried using them to do bit torrent – no problem other than speed. It seems neither network is blocking ports – yet. I noticed the Wing timed out after 10 minutes or so and i had to hit a key on the screen to restore it.

But all this does is make we want 3G that much more or how about 3.5G?? Someone want to send me some high speed mobile goodness to review? What is the best available connection for WWAN in the US? Other regions?

Anyone… Anyone… Mcfly?

_TheAdmiNviaEdge_

Update: The Wing on Tmobile timed out or something after 20 minutes and came up on the sim lock screen – Network Locked Enter Unclock Code

Strange and then I had to restart it. Now its working again. ATT seems to be my favorite at the moment.Update: 1:26PM They had a dude come out and resplice some wires in a box in front of my building. Everything magically came back on. I also noticed a huge box inside the box marked XM. Lots of blinking lights.

And I’m back @ full speed around 20 Mbits – That 20kbps was killer!

Yeah The HTC Excaliber has a cool touch strip that tmobile has decided you Dash users should not get. To restore its HTC functionality Fire up your registry editor that you grabbed a few days back and here are the registry keys to change:

 * HKCUControlPanelJogBarSettingsBottomKeyApplicationName = Windowsiexplore.exe
… to convince bottom key of the JOGGR to invoke Pocket Internet Explorer

 * HKCUControlPanelJobBarSettingsTopKeyApplicationName = BACK
… to convince top key of the JOGGR to perform “back” function while browsing.

 * HKCUControlPanelJogBarSettingsSwitchToAudioFunc = 0
… to make it possible to scroll through web pages by using the JOGGR strip as a

As always, you should keep in mind that any registry changes are unsupported and run the risk of forcing a hard reset. Back up your data before attempting. It also takes some getting used to if you have never used it before.

Here is some information not readily available for the Dash…

To perform a hard reset (Erase ALL your data) on the t-mobile dash hold the two soft buttons down then while holding those buttons hold the power button for 2 seconds you will get a prompt to press 0 to reset. Time is of the essence if you miss it try again.

Edit: Here is a second easier method:

If you cant get this to work you can navigate through these steps as well:

Dash Hard Reset

1. Select Start
2. Accessories
3. Clear Storage
4. Type 1234 in the box
5. Select YES.

This just in our reader Philly2VSU seems to be having problems with his Wing. After removing PocketDivx he can not use MP3s as ringtones and some other glitches. He writes to us…

okay im having a problem with my t-mobile wing i recently purchased, the problem
im having is ive been using active sync to download mp3 files to my phone an i
never had a problem i actually used a audio cutting program to create short
ringtones to add on my phone now yesterday i downloaded a program directly from
my phone over wifi the program was called PocketDivx now i didn’t get the
performance from the program in which i was seeking so i uninstalled the program
now when i add ringtones or music an i tap on it to open it a error message that
say”the file cannot be opened.either it is not signed with a trusted
certificate, or one of its components cannot be found. if the problem
persist, try reinstalling or restoring the file. this has ruined all my previous
ringtones i had on the device an ones i put on now so i cant assign any mp3
ringtones to my phone i can only open songs in windows media player can you
please help me with this problem

We have not had this issue before but assume it happened upon removal of the PocketDivx client. We do not know how to have the os re-associate the application to play mp3′s instead of Pocket Divx and recomended a Hard Reset. After backing up your information you can :

tap start>settings>system tab>clear storage. then enter 1234 and tap yes

everything saved on the device ecept the memory card will be deleted

Anyone have a better solution? Let us know how it goes Philly!

Philly 6:30PM Says:

problem solved as you suggested i had to reset default factory settings an rather than holding down the two soft keys an hitting power i had to tap start>settings>system tab>clear storage. then enter 1234 an tap yes in the process i had to delete everything saved on the device but it didn’t matter because i had my t-mobile wing documents backed up on several folders on my computer thanks for all the help it was very helpful in the solution.

Glad we could help… Keep emailing us those questions!

Every time i restart my WM6 dash i see this. I didn’t have it before I upgraded. What is it and make it go away!

This is an easy one Dan! First make sure your device is Application Unlocked. Then install CeleTask and view processes now kill the two or three that hav fav5 in them.

Now you can remove them from startup with Total Commander. Remove everything that mentions fav in it and I got rid of a bunch of other stuff as well.

I know this will help Dan – For some reason the answer is no where to be found on the net!

So we happened to get our hands on an HTC Advantage last week, and damn is this thing ready to rumble. The keyboard (which we just weren’t that fond of) snaps into place from a good inch away, and feels more like an industrial magnet than something you’d find on a consumer device. The VGA screen is fantastically large and bright, and played back full-res video without a hiccup. It even has an idle mode with a couple mini-widgets and an email ticker when the keyboard is magnetically latched onto the body to protect the screen (that VueFLO nav, we think). Check out the gallery to get a better sense of what you’re in for, but be warned: this is a
machine by and for handheld computing enthusiasts and cellphone nerds. So even
though HTC wants you to replace your laptop with an Advantage for short trips,
it’s still a beast of a connected PDA at heart.

This is not the case with Windows Mobile 6, Microsoft cleaned up the tray function and made it part of the init sequence during boot time. This means that it has to be removed from the registry. Here is the key that have to be deleted.

\HKLM\init\Launch92 string value Trayap.exe
Perform a soft reboot.
I used Total Commander found in Windows Mobile Application list here. As always be careful that you are deleting the right registry entry since it affects how the system boots.

Since WM6 was released, we have seen a lot of posts and if we can save you folks out there some time, why not put all the questions/ answers in one place?

Thanks go out to the authors and contributors of hacks, ideas and tweaks on these forums. I cannot remember who did what though.

Here is what I did on my Dash before and after upgrading to WM6 from T-Mobile:

1) Removed my 1GB MicroSD card from the Dash.

Hard Reset: Start > Accessories > Clear Storage (soft resets itself and then reinstalls factory contents and settings on its own; total= 2-3 mns)

Upgraded to WM6 from T-Mobile.

Deleted the Dash from ActiveSync in File > Delete Mobile Device on all my computers.

Beyond this point, each time I was given the choice when installing something on the Dash, I chose to install on the Storage Card.

2) Plugged into ActiveSync so I can transfer SurRealNetworks App Unlock and run it to App unlock the Dash.

4) With a card reader and while pugged into my XP, I formated the MicroSD.

Transferred all my .cab files saved in a folder on my computer, a sort of back up, to the Dash MicroSD and ran each .cab file from the Dash. At times a Soft Reset was necessary. When all programs were installed, the .cab files were no longer needed on the Dash so I deleted them.

This is what I have installed. They are all free except for WebCamera Plus.

Total Commander
Alpha Numeric Display (blue)
SetJogBar
SmartSS
WebCamera Plus
WordPad
Smoresoft Sudoku

4) Using Total Commander, I made the following changes to the Registry in order to customize my Dash.

*** Start menu set to grid view:
\HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Shell\StartMenu\GridView
Change to 0 (zero)

*** Get ride of the T-Mobile startup and shutdown animations and sounds:
\HKLM\Software\HTC\Startup\Image <– emtpy field and type none \HKLM\Software\HTC\Startup\WAV <– empty field and type none then \HKLM\Software\HTC\Shutdown\Image <– empty field and type none \HKLM\Software\HTC\Shutdown\WAV <– empty field and type none then HKLM\System\Startup\2\Duration <– empty field and type 0 (zero). HKLM\System\Startup\2\Splash <– empty field and type none then HKLM\System\Shutdown\2\Splash <– empty field and type none *** Get ride of the beep at the beginning of each outgoing call HKCU\ControlPanel\SoundCategories\Callstart\IniVol <– empty field and type 0 (zero). This hack doesn’t stick it seems and I have to keep doing it over and over. *** Changing PIE home page HKLM/Software/ Microsoft/InternetExplorer/AboutURls Change home_0409 value to whatever website you want *** Remap the pink t-Zones Key on the Dash Using TotalCommander or WordPad, Edit \Windows\Short_IE.lnk and change to 36#”\windows\iexplore.exe (to launch Pocket Internet Explorer) or to 19#\Windows\IA_Task_Manager.exe?:TaskManagerApp for Task Manager. Soft-Reset. *** To get voice command to work over BT: HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Bluetooth\AudioGateway\BTA GExtModule Change value from OEMAGW.dll to \Windows\vcbthag.dll and soft reset. *** Change the name of the Dash in ActiveSync HKLM/Ident/Name *** Smaller scrollbars- Perform the following regustry changes to allows 4 icons on a row in the start menu instead of 3! It also allows more to be viewed on the screen in IE! 1) Go to HLM\SYSTEM\GWE\ 2) Adjust the following values cyHScr : Horizontal Scrollbars Height in pixels (default is 6, set it to 3) cxVScr : Vertical Scrollbars Width in pixels (default is 6, set it to 3) 3) Soft-reset *** Replace the Incoming/ Connecting T-Mobile screen: In \Windows replace BackgroundImage_Land.bmp with your image (using the computer and ActiveSync not the Dash explorer) Soft-reset ***Replace the T-Mobile logo in call history In \Windows\ and copy BrandingBrick.gif to your PC for backup Replace this file with the GIF image of your choice. The image must be 320×27. Soft-reset. As you guys add to this, I will try and update these FAQs with the help of the moderators hopefully.

I’m not sure if it was T-Mobile, HTC, or Microsoft, but someone missed something with profiles (and given the Home Screen reset, I’m saying T-Mobile). The problem is that if you have reminders set to play sound on your Normal profile and then switch to the Vibrate or Silent profiles, you’d lose your reminder sounds on all profiles. It would still vibrate for you, but no volume. Which I’m sure the majority of my cube-mates have loved since it’s been quieter in the workplace. But even so: it’s a bug.

The bug is a part of the Normal profile file: where Vibrate and Silent turn off the sound, Normal simply never turns it back on. I’ve tried mucking with the Normal.def.prof.xml that is in the \Windows directory, but that seemed to make the phone unhappy… but I found another workaround.

Read on for more – update: it’s been looking like Vista has been persisting the System attribute flag for this file where as XP and 2003 have been losing it. I’ve added two more steps to this list that should help out.

Here’s the short story on these .def.prof.xml files… they are there for defaults [duh] and they are baked into the ROM. When you modify your profile settings in Settings app WM6 reads in a copy of this file, modifies it based on your settings, and stores this new copy in:

\Application Data\Profiles

So here’s the workaround, and because of the new security for OS files in Vista, you might have to jump through some hoops – you will have to change your Folder Options (via Control Panel) and uncheck “Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)”. Also the XML file comes over as System/Read Only/Hidden so you might have to attrib it as well.

Step 1: Make a change to your Normal profile. Raise the volume of some alert or something. Change something to get the device to create the following file: \Application Data\Profiles\Normal.prof.xml

Step 2: Connect via ActiveSync on XP or WMDC on Vista and copy this file to your desktop.

Step 3: Edit this XML file – add the following blurb to the SoundCategories section (Sorry for the image – script wouldn’t take – thanks Bruce!):

Step 4: Save this file on your PC.

Step 5: Set the System flag on this file. You can do this with a right click on the file and setting the properties or via a command prompt: attrib +s normal.prof.xml.

Step 6: Now copy it back to \Application Data\Profiles

That’s it. I’ve switched to and from Vibrate mode both via menu and by holding the # key – both have been fine. I’ve also had Reminders with sound since making this change and across reboots.

One thing to note: I want my Reminder alerts to vibrate and play sound (hence the Script setting of v0p) as well as playing at level 4 volume. I know that InitVol can be values from 0-5. I would guess that v0 would be “voice only” but I don’t know for certain – you can certainly play with Alarm settings via the UI and see what the values are before making those changes…

— And as always: Of course as this is a registry change to your phone, please use it at your own risk and don’t yell at me if you tap something wrong or don’t work with other handsets! I used it on a Dash – use at your own risk on your Blackjack, Q, Windows Mobile Professional, or Windows Mobile Standard phone. I’m just passing on what I’ve learned from other WM users in the hope that I help someone else out! —

VITO Technology is glad to present you a free small utility for unlocked Smartphones that works like a clipboard.

Sometimes every Smartphone user has to face the difficulty of transfering text from one edit box (any default editable field) to another on their Smartphone. Say, you need to copy a phone number from e-mail and send an sms to this number. In this case, thou funny it may sound, you still have to use a banal pen to write down the number to type it later. This is a big drawback of Windows Mobile platform for Smartphones.

VITO CopyPaste solves this problem with edit boxes and makes Windows Mobile for Smartphones more functional. To install VITO CopyPaste you copy the setup file to your Smartphone and run it. A second later you can bring up a context CopyPaste menu in any default edit box by press’n'holding the central joystick button. In this menu there are options to copy or cut all the text in the currently active edit box, or else choose selection mode and select the part of the text you need to copy or cut by pressing left and right joystick buttons. After you have copied or cut the necessary part of text to clipboard, you can paste it into another edit box.

VITO CopyPaste is easy to operate. Copy the file VitoCopyPaste.exe to your Smartphone (e.g. to \Storage\Program Files\VITO\CopyPaste) and run it once to activate. Attention! Do not copy it to the default star-up folder (\Storage\Windows\StartUp or \Windows\StartUp). To disable VitoCopyPaste run VitoCopyPaste.exe again.

HAPPY FRIDAY BOYZ AND GIRLS!

So Windows Mobile 6 Professional says it comes with a remote desktop client but where is it on this new device from Tmobile?

I went looking for it today to access one of my servers on the fly and guess what – It ain’t there! I called Tmobile on it and they said it does not come with Mobile 6 pro – according to Microsoft here .

Tmobile then went on to tell me it is a feature that most WM6 devices will not have it as it costs money for an additional licence. I don’t get it! WM5 had it no problem even its predecessor had it… I can’t buy it, download it, or even find it!

Another issue I noticed with this WM6 device is I can not change ANY system files on the device. I can not replace the TMOBILE home page that comes up as part of IE. I can not change other templates. I tried from the phone, from Activesync, and a few other ways that I was sure was going to work.

Anyone know a way around either of these issues? And how about a way to SIM unlock it while you are at it?

Happy Saturday. Here is a question that comes to us from John in Denver.

Admin – how can I stop my Ipaq 6515 from freezing up? I have had it for 2 years and love it but recently it has been slow as hell. I have a few programs on it but when i have anything open and the phone rings — I cant answer it. I try but it fails to pick up and the call goes to voicemail.

The camera app almost never starts and tells me – out of memory.

HELP ME ADMIN!

Solution:

Make sure you restart the beast daily and manage your memory with the task manager!

We bought our upgrade that doubled our memory from here: http://www/PocketPCTechs.com and we are very pleased!

Ok Kiddies,
This is part 2 of of the illuminating subject of dealing with the 8125 Wizard and it’s battery madness. If you’ve read Part 1 of this series, you’ll remember that the battery in this device can indeed be resurrected from the dead, and with a little ingenuity, and some careful handiwork, this problem can be dealt with using some basic household items. This is however the more technical solution. This works for people who aren’t afraid to strip a wire, and who can tell the difference between red and black. As always make sure you do a backup before you start!

The tools:
– an Xacto knife, or a regular knife will do
– an old, regular usb cable (that you can part with, its gonna get cut)
– your dead, seemingly useless 8125 Wizard battery
– a cigarette lighter, or matches will do

**Step 1- Grab your usb cable and your knife and cut off the square end, (Note that im not responsible for you damaging a cable you needed, these instructions call for an OLD cable that you presumably don’t need for anything, anymore besides this project)
**Step 2- Grab the knife or Xacto and CAREFULLY, GENTLY strip away about 2 inches of the thick outer lining from the end of the wire you just cut (Again please note, im not responsible for you damaging a wire that you NEED, use a wire u definitely DON’T NEED aside from this task)
**Step 3- You’ve now exposed the inner wirings of a usb cable, You can determine which wires are which from their inner sheathing color. Usually power wires are either black and red, or black and white. In any case separate the positive and negative cables from the other cables around them.
**Step 4- CAREFULLY grab your cigarette lighter or matches, and gently heat 2 inches of the end of the exposed positive and negative wires, one by one – taking care not to ignite the plastic sheathing, but rather just melting it a little. (again i’m not responsible for any fires you can cause by doing this)
**Step 5- Grab the knife and gently, carefully slide the melted portion of sheathing (about 2 inches) off of the delicate, tiny inner wires as illustrated in the picture above. if you screw up and cut off the tiny inner wires, you have to start over from Step 2.
**Step 6- If you’ve managed to strip off the tiny, delicate inner sheathings, you can now perform the jump-start.
**Step 7- put the 8125 on to charge from another cable (remember you should have another cable that you actually use to charge your phone, either a wall charger or a working, un-cut usb cable) and leave it there.
**Step 8- Remove the battery from the 8125
**Step 9- This is the part where you have to BE SURE YOU’VE CORRECTLY DETERMINED WHICH WIRE IS POSITIVE AND WHICH IS NEGATIVE. I can’t stress this enough. In the case of black and red wires, black is ground (negative) and red is juice (positive). In the case of black and white wires, again, black is ground (negative) and white is juice (positive)
**Step 10- The 8125 battery will always have an indication of which terminal is positive (+) and which terminal is negative (-). Gently touch the positive wire to the positive terminal, and the negative wire to the negative terminal. If you feel the battery heating up noticeably, STOP you’ve got the wires wrong. Start step 9 over after switching the wires.
**Step 11- Hold it there for about 5 minutes, put the battery back in your phone, and start it up – YOUR BACK IN BUSINESS!

If these steps don’t work, check to make sure you’ve got the right inner wires. Anybody having trouble with this can leave a post here with a picture of your inner wires, and we’ll be able to tell you which are power. you can also email the pic to info at asktheadmin dot com and we’ll be sure to determine which wires are your power wires, and their polarities.

Done deal. i hope this helps all the hapless people who are about to buy into this phone on account if it getting as cheap as it is. The fact of the matter is $50-$100 for a touch screen phone with WM5, WIFI and GPRS really is a great deal, and it makes a very intelligent phone more readily available to the masses, and thats who I’m looking to help out here on ASK THE ADMIN.
Stay tuned next time as Commodore finds the next big idea to discuss and hopefully shed some light on, because Commodore 64s were put on this earth to help people, and thats what we will do.

Peace

One of the commenters said:

For a better desiccant, it’d be a good idea to store all those little silica gel packets that come in anything from shoe boxes to moisture-sensitive gadgets.

I have had lots of experience with getting stuff wet that wasn’t suppose to get wet. So a few rules of thumb are make sure the unit is in the powered off state as it dries. And try to get it out in the sun or in a warm spot to dry it off.

If the damage didn’t happen initially on impact in the water, chances are it can be resurrected!

The sun, rice or silica gel packs all do the same thing and suck up that evil moisture and allow your circuit boards data to flow again.
