Do you use Firefox? Most of our readers do and we all know that 10 open tabs can be highly problematic for our system memory. There have been times I have seen my Firefox get close to 1.5 gigs of memory. That is just unacceptable!

So what do you do? Do you stop using Firefox? Absolutely not!  Will you use Internet Explorer? It is just as big of a resource hog and it causes system crashes as well (well it depends on what version you are using).

I have found a much needed extension to control memory usage in Firefox called Memory Fox. You can grab the installer over here.

So to start, I took a look at my 4 open tabs in Firefox. They are using 256 Megs of memory. No big deal right. But a few hours from now that can balloon up to 4 times what it is. You can see my task manager open below with the Firefox process at the top hogging up my resources.

And that is on a good day! What about my Vista machine at home that ONLY runs Firefox? Take a look at the 1.4 gigs of used memory below. Sheeesh! Apps should not be allowed to do that!!

FireFox got a feature called pipeline which can speedup things and you will be able to browse fasssssssster.

The thing about pipelining is instead of using the old fashion way of sending a request then wait for the response from web server then send the next request, you can just send up to 8 requests while the responses are on the way, that would speedup your browsing if you got a fast Internet connection (there will be no significant difference if you got low speed).

The only drawback (and the reason why it is turned off by default) is the possibility that some web servers might not like the pipeline behavior and therefore stop responding to your requests (break the web page), to this day I didn’t have any such problems (am I lucky or good?).

Here is what you need to do:
1) In address bar write “about:config” then click on “I’ll be careful, I promise!”.
2) In filter box type “network.http.keep-alive”, if Value is False double click so it become true.
3) In filter box type “network.http.version”, make sure the Value is 1.1
4) In filter box type “network.http.pipelining”, if Value is False double click so it become true.
5) If you are on proxy or you are not sure In filter box type “network.http.proxy.pipelining”, if Value is False double click so it become true.
6) In filter box type “network.http.pipelining.maxrequests”, double click and set the value to 8 (you can set it to any number between 1 and 8).

That’s it, wear racing gloves and feel the speed!

Most of you have heard of the website http://www.BugMeNot.com that provides free community user names and passwords for sites. This made life moderately easier but I still had to go to their website and look up the security information.

That is where this Firefox extension comes into play… if there is a user name and password for the site you are on and you right click on the text fields – BugMeNot the FireFox plug in offers instant gratification…

That sounds perverted huh?

Um how about Instant Population of the fields.

But wait, you say that’s just one thing Admin!

The Firefox add on IE Tab solves this problem, though with a continued frustration. With IE Tab you can embed IE in tabs and see web sites as they should be seen. Just click on the IE Tab icon, and the rendering engine switches to IE, while you remain in Firefox. For sites regularly visited, their URL’s can be added to the

IE Tab Site Filter. Neat, but I found myself frustrated with having to frequently add URL’s to the filter. (Go to the IE Tab options, check the enable box under Site Filters, then add URL’s as necessary.) After adding a URL to the site filter, each time you visit that site Firefox and IE Tab will automatically display that site, and all of

its pages, as if in IE Explorer. But you will actually still be in Firefox with all of its benefits.

Frequently adding sites to the site filter is a time consuming step I wanted to eliminate. Then, one recent morning, it struck me how simple this was going to be. I went to the site filter, deleted all those URL’s and added *.* as the only filter. Voila! The best of Firefox and IE together in one place. Now all the foxes are happy. And, by the way, if this slows my computer it isn’t enough for me to notice it. Pages still appear more or less “instantaneously” on my DSL connection.

Alright, alright enough with the chit-chat here is the list:

1. Duplicate tabs. Press Ctrl while dragging a tab to create a duplicate of the dragged tab including its history. Note that this feature doesn’t work on Mac.
2. Move tabs to another window. Just drag a tab and drop it on another window to move it. If the dragged tab is the last one in its window, it will be closed.
3. Resize the search bar. When the search bar is placed next to the location bar, you can drag the handler between them (invisible on Windows and Linux) to resize it.
4. Add keyword search. Select Manage Search Engines… in the search engines menu to open the Search Engines Manager, select a search engine, press Edit Keyword… and enter a few characters to define one. Now you can enter the keyword followed by your search terms in the location bar to search with that plugin.
5. Discontinuous selections. Make a selection with the mouse as you usually do. Then press and hold the Ctrl (Cmd on Mac) key to make additional selections and create a larger discontinuous one so you can copy or print just what you need.

This truly is the social web browser. There are downfalls to parts of it like no image uploading using their blogger interface but hey, this is only a beta. It does show integration with the top blogging software and has lots of new stuff I will be exploring throughout the week. If you want to give Flock a try you can grab it here.
