GMail-Fu: Quick searches to help navigate un-read email on Gmail or Google Apps.
on March 19, 2013 at 10:00 am
Google’s GMail is great but it offers no way to view only unread emails with a click.
This is highly annoying and needs a workaround to view only unread messages in any Gmail account:
- Type “is:unread” (not including the quotation marks) in the Gmail search field.
- Click Search Mail.
As a shortcut you can use “l:unread” or even “l:^u” instead of “is:unread” (or “label:unread“).
Don’t forget you can combine this search for unread messages with others like this:
- “l:^u from:karl” finds all unread messages from “karl”,
- “l:^u l:^t” finds all unread starred mail, and
- “l:^u l:^k subject:invoice” finds all unread messages with the word “invoice” in the subject that are in the Trash.

not true; I have my inbox configured so that unread only are in top portion; starred or important in 2nd section; “everything else” in third… easy to configure from gmail settings
Hey Scott,
Share what settings you used to displayed unread messages only as a easy query. In Outlook you can click on a Unread Folder. This is not an option on Gmail. We are offering a quick easy alternative.
