We had the pleasure of reviewing the HP Mini 100e which is a classroom laptop. It reminds me of the one laptop per child plan a few years back and actually comes close to their price point at around $300. there were a few features that this machine had that I really liked. I should start off by saying I could not get this mini laptop away from my 3 year old daughter. She absolutely loved it’s handle. She carried around the house for a week!

The machine comes with a spill resistant keyboard,  durable design meant to withstand daily use by young students and beginner PC users, a network activity light on the reverse side of the lid when the machine is online, integrated camera, integrated modem. With a 3 cell battery the machine sees about 3-4 1/2 hours of use and with a 6-cell battery the machine can get any where up to 8 1/2 hours of use. Both models are under $300!

Organizations can have the machines branded and other options. Currently they are only available for bulk purchases from educational institutions but we will see what happens in the future. Personally I like these machines better for younger students than iPad type devices because they teach them how to use a keyboard and mouse.

The only thing I would do differently with the production of this machine would be to include a touch screen option for transitioning small children from touching the screen to using the mouse. This would make the machine a bit more expensive and missing the $300 mark so I doubt we will ever see it here!

All in all I am very impressed and realize the need to teach the children about computers and technology young!
