Man, I did the exact same thing 4 years ago, except I thought I was screwed (didn't know about recovery software) and used that backup drive several times again only to discover I could have recovered my 2 years worth of lost pictures and videos. I was (and still am) mad as hell.
That was one hard lesson. The other one was that you can't recover data to the same hard drive you are recovering from because it overwrites the very data you are trying to recover. I lost a pastor's sermons for 4 years trying to recover his data back to his same disk.
If there is a hard way to learn something, I guarantee I will find it. Thanks for sharing your story.

I use ontrack data recovery, and it has gotten files back from double formats. Best recovery software I have ever used!

Used something I found called Data Doctor Recovery from http://www.datadoctor.biz/

It worked fine. A little slow, but I got like literally 99% of everything back.

Cost me $70 or so, and when I told my boss that it cost me money he told me to expense it, despite the fact that 90% of the data recovered from my own bone headed mistake was mine.

I tried to argue that it was my data and my mistake, therefore I should pay, to which he replied, 'submit the check req and don't make me mad(with a wink).'

He's a good guy and takes care of me.

Yes those are great programs for the big fish or the pirates. How about free guys? Remember "Free is for me"!

And is it just me or does Knoppix ALWAYS see my corrupted drives and lets me copy off at least 90 percent if not more?

Sloth what app didyou buy and how much was it? That was what I felt bad about - jedi response time was down and Sloth spent dough!

Bah, Dan beat me to it. I love GDB, it's got me out of so many tight-spots it's untrue :)

Also, Acronis Recovery Expert is pretty amazing. It's part of the Disk Director Suite, and can pull out deleted partitions from HDDs. Sounds like just what you needed Slothman, or perhaps I mis-read?
