Can I disable the RESTART option after completing windows update? Is there any way to cancel a Reboot?
Mar 26th

MJ writes to us that her machine runs updates around lunch time and she keeps getting the prompt do you want to restart now?
Not only is it annoying – sometimes she clicks yes by accident and her whole world comes crashing down. (See the fix for this at the bottom of the post – not for the faint of heart or slow typers!!!)
Not only will we show you how to disable the automatic restart option after updates via Group Policy we will show you how to quickly cancel a reboot.
- Go to Start –> Run, type “gpedit.msc”.
- Go to Computer Configuration –> Administrative Templates –> Windows Components –> Windows Update.
- Look for option “No Auto Restart For Scheduled Automatic Update installation” and Enable that option.
- This will make sure that your computer is not rebooted automatically, instead it will just notify you for a reboot. It will be users choice as to when to reboot your computer
- If in case you want it to notify you again and again, after a specific interval of time, then look for option “Re-prompt for restart with scheduled installations”. Enable that option and specify the time.
Everything above is all easy, its just editing some policies which you can perform easily. [TechiesDen]
Now to cancel a reboot:
- Start
- Run
- Type Shutdown -a and hit enter
Thats it, that will cancel your impending doom if you hit it fast enough!
I cant format my hard drive that has strange partitions on it help!
Mar 25th
If you have a hard drive of unknown origins there are times when you just can’t format it using the normal methods like an OS’s installer or Windows built in Disk Configuration Utility. NTFS’s good old security tries to do you dirty as well. It can be a real pain in the ass.
But AtA has been through this MANY MANY times and we know of an old school solution to blowing away almost any fussy hard drive.
Is Dos 6.22 old enough for you? Fdisk and format are your friends… You didn’t forget about them did you? 6.22 is before NTFS so it doesn’t worry about the security – isn’t that special?
Don’t worry loyal AtA fan we won’t make you go scurrying back to your domicile looking for your old dusty box of floppy disks because we have an image for you right over here…
You can use this with a blank floppy disk to boot into 6.22 and get down and dirty (You do know what a floppy disk is don’t you?).
How do you deal with formating issues? Hit us up in the comments.

Hate Telemarketers? Use This Nifty Tool to Look Them Up
Mar 24th
I don’t know anyone who doesn’t get a call from a telemarketer at least once a week if not much more. They’ll call and leave no message and annoy the heck out of you.
Unfortunately, some of these calls are actually made by criminals who try to get your personal information.
News articles over the past few days discuss about people trying to scam you out of your money or your private information. Scammers posing as US Department of Revenue employees, local bank employees, even police officers, have all been in the news over the past few days.
There’s a website called CallCatalog.com that uses crowd sourcing to grow their database of telemarketers. Crowd sourcing is basically when you, I, and everyone else go there and upload our experiences; it then shares it with everyone else. Sort of like a social network. When you go to their website, you put the phone number of the caller you want to lookup in the yellow box at the top of the page. It then presents information on what other people have written about these callers.

You can also post your own complaint.
Their blog also provides some additional information about how to deal with telemarketers and unwanted callers. Check them out.
Mount Your Mac on Your PC Using Target Disk Mode.
Mar 24th
Now that I have jumped deep into the pool that is Apple I have discovered some tricks that those fan boys don’t want you to know.
I am going to combine two of them into one tip for you out there in AtA land.
The two tricks are - reading ANY MAC disk on your PC or from within BootCamp. And the other is to use Mac’s fancy smancy ultra insecure target disk mode to turn a MAC of your choosing into nothing more than a glorified firewire drive sans security!

Windows Mobile 6.5 Test Run Screen Shots
Mar 20th
I just loaded up Windows Mobile 6.5 on my HTC Touch Pro aka the ATT Fuze and I must say it is definitely usable! Microsoft is finally getting some things right! Here is my home screen using Titanium (MS’s new interface) and after the jump find a shot of my customized HoneyComb start menu and a shot of the about screen.
Stay tuned for my full on dissection as I wait patiently for a legit release. This version of 6.5 is from Da_G on XDA-Developers and he has done an awesome job so far! Anyone else using it?
Exchange contact information virtually save a tree today!
Mar 19th
I was at a business meeting this week and as usual I bring a stack of business cards with me to give to business contacts. We all do the card exchanging dance, it has gone on for as long as I remember. I have gone through tens of thousands of cards over my career and I have huge piles of other people’s cards as well.
I have come up with solutions to manage my existing cards I have received such as scanning, filing and throwing out the physical cards. But this does not prevent you from still having to exchange cards. I was put on to a new service called Contxts which is in Alpha (So expect things not to work and it to develop over the next little while).
I learned about the service when the third person I ran into asked me if i was on Contxt. I said “Huh?”
I was schooled on this new service which stores your virtual business card and returns it to any user texting your username to 50500.
Want to see what it does – text AskTheAdmin to 50500 and you will get a card I set up for this article. And no that phone number is NOT my number!
I had a Palm Pilot Vx way back when and I tried “Beaming” my contact information to others and it always caused some problem or another. Mostly with finding out if the recipient had a phone or device that was capable of catching my beam. Contxt uses text messaging which any modern cell phone has – this opens up the service to any cell phone user – now that’s a big market!
Let’s check out the service. Browse on over to http:/www.contxts.com and sign up for the free service (Normal Text Messaging Rates Will Apply!) After choosing a username and giving contxts your information you will see a screen similar to this one below with your information on it:
You can customize the message to your hearts content as well as remove Contxts text ad along the bottom. There is also a check box at the bottom of this screen that allows you to get a text message with the users phone number when they request your card. This is a neat tracking feature but again normal text messaging rates DO apply so use your brain when choosing to check or not to check this box.
Due to Contxts Alpha status some features are still being developed like the social network connectivity boxes you see below. You can fill them out and save the information but it is not transmitted via text message just yet.
You can also TXT ‘SEND 3034759204′ TO 50500 TO BEAM YOUR CARD FROM YOUR PHONE (where 3034759204 is the recipients’ number) and this will send the card to that person without them having to request it.
Another feature that is in the work is Contxt’s contacts that will allow you to upload your contacts name, phone number and email addresses. It does not say anything other than coming soon – but you can bet this will be integrated in text messages at a later date. Instead of saying 9175551212 requested your contact information, it will probably say joe Shmoe requested your card ala PhoneTag’s contact page.
Let’s take a look at the actual text messaging system – I used my HTC Touch Pro to text ASKTHEADMIN to 50500 as you can see below (and used Pocket Controller to grab the screen shots)
About 45 seconds later I received a text message back from 50500 with the card I created at the beginning of the article. And almost instantly after that I got a text message that I requested a card… How did they know my name? That I do not know and some geek cred goes to the first AskTheAdmin reader who can tell me how they got that info down with out me uploading any contact information!
I am starting to use it on a regular basis now and will keep a watchful eye on Contxts as it is an awesome up and coming service that will surely get bought out and cost money at a later date! Let us know what you think of Contxts and if you use another method of digitally transferring your contact information instead of the old fashioned card exchange method that has been going on for a long ass time!
