How can I identify my mainboard without opening the case?
I’ll keep this short and sweet. If you’re re-installing your OS, and need to know the motherboard model number, to grab the drivers online, check out CPU-Z. It beats opening your PC case and trying to find that tiny number hidden amongst the cables and drives :).

I use http://www.ma-config.com/StartDetection-1-1.html
The firt time you go on this site, you have to install an ActiveX. After that, the site scan your computer and display all your devices (mainboard infos too).

Astroman, while it may be useful, I am always weary of installing ActiveX controls onto a business machine. At least with CPU-Z I can run it from my USB key, or from a network share and not have to worry about removing the ActiveX afterwards. Another thing to remember is that many mainboards have integrated NICs, so you might not be able to browse the internet until you’ve actually installed the drivers.
