Does this apply to Word 2007? Someone tried deleting the normal.dot and it caused a lot of problems.

Adobe Acrobat Professional v7 (and sometimes v8) and SnagIt have been the root of this cause in my organization for about a year now. As stated, deleting normal.dot usually resolves the issue. Adobe Acrobat v9 appears to be more stable.

I came across a similar issue with Word 2007 in Windows XP. Come to find out that a lot of the HP printer drivers were causing problems when shutting down (printing itself worked just fine). Change the default printer, and *poof* problem gone.
