Get the REAL XP SP3 download before the rush!
How long was it after Windows XP SP 2 came out before you were ACTUALLY able to download it?
I remember the mad dash to download XP SP2 and how the Windows Update Servers were crawling. With this tip you can skip the 56kbps downloads and have it in a jiffy.
This super secret download link (Waiver: Not so super, nor secret but VERY nifty and a download link!) will get you ahead of the game. Totally legit files hashes and all direct from the ms servers.
Let’s see if those damn rumors of XP running 10-20% quicker after the Service Packing is done. Keep your fingers crossed for some good improvements rather than some system crashing blue screening!
Warning: This update will turn on the Windows Firewall – even if it has been previously disabled due to GP! I need to look into this further!
Double Warning: This SP has a compatibility issue with Microsoft Dynamics Retail Management System (RMS) if you use this hold off on the update

I have seen some better memory allocation (less leaks) and overall quickness. I dont know if it is me just wanting it badly but it actually seems faster!
The remote desktop client is updated and a slew of other features got minor upgrades. What are you kids liking/hating?
Put us on!

The new mstsc also seems faster when i go full screen it seems like I am in front of the machine. it used to lag and now its great no other changes other than sp3. I am glad I read the next article you wrote on the firewall issue – you saved me some big headaches in remote locations.

I noticed the same thing. It is also a different client than I got off of the 2008. Still messing around with it but this release seems solid.

I already have it slipstreamed into my Windows XP Discs. You can easily do it with the /integrate switch.

I just used Nlite and added the batch file to disable the firewall!
Can you elaborate on that switch El Di Pablo?

Hells yeah! You need to take your Windows XP CD, and extract it to a folder (i.e. c:winxp) then you download the SP3 executable you mentioned above. Once it is downloaded, you open a command prompt and browse to the directory you downloaded it to. Then you run the following command: <SP3>.exe /integrate:c:winxp then hit enter. Of course you will need to rename <SP3> with the actual name of the service pack installer.

Oh yeah, you probably already guessed that when it is done, you need to burn it back to CD with a CD burner like Nero. You can follow these instructions here: http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=297 “>http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=297

I'm not sure why intense debate is adding an extra slash after my file paths…

This is a Release Candidate, not an RTM (Release To Manufacturer). Not only that, but SP3 RTM, which was supposed to be released today (Apr 29), got pulled because it still has an issue.

Correct – kinda… This was pegged to be the RTM but a bug associated with Microsoft Dynamics Retail Management System (RMS) caused them to pull it. But so far that is the only know issue and we stand by our recommendation to test it out as long as you are not using RMS anywhere on your network.

The guys in my office love it. The app does everything for you and executes the familiar wilndows commands behind the scenes and creates a bootable image or cd/dvd.
I just tried the Vlite to do a vista disk and it was just as easy. I have been messing around making install disks with packages of office and other apps we use. I set up the local admin passwords and got our open license serials embedded in that bitch
Am I automating myself out of a job?
