Pain Free Backup: Using WordPress to Back Up Blogger – Also Can Be Used For Migration

bloggerWP Pain Free Backup: Using WordPress to Back Up Blogger Also Can Be Used For MigrationSo we flopped around Google’s website yesterday and stared in disbelief as the only answer to backup or export your data still seemed like a crappy work-a-round.

But it looks like WordPress one up’ed Google’s Blogger by adding an Import feature to their WordPress 2.0!

It also works with LiveJournal, TypePad and MovableType.

It only works with NEW blogger templates so if you haven’t upgraded – Now is the time to do it!

They will also let you import your categories as tags – selectively! Cool stuff. Way to convert users WordPress!

We are in the process of importing all of our data – posts and comments to http://asktheadmin.wordpress.com/ we will be using this as a backup for AskTheAdmin. Not only will this give us a LIVE backup that we can browse to in the even of an catastrophe like yesterday it also lets us play with the platform we will be moving to in the near future.

Mind you as you add more posts they will not be AUTOMATICALLY backed up you will need to REPEAT the process.

So here you go – all simple like. Even A child should be able to do it!

  1. Create a WordPress blog over @ http://www.wordpress.com/
  2. Goto Manage – Import
  3. Choose Blogger
  4. Give Blogger the go ahead to allow WordPress to grab ALL your data.
  5. Make sure you select comments and posts – hit the import button and sit back!
  6. Go play with your new WordPress replica of your Blogger Blog!

This is friggin Awesome! Thanks Karl! I am backing up my blog to WordPress as I type this!

It Takes forrrrrrreeeeeeever! It is still running. But at least then you can export from wordpress to a normal medium!

I’m glad you liked it – I found it a lot better than any other solution available!

  3. El Di Pablo says:

I did notice one thing… I post a lot of video’s when I’m lazy, and those don’t get transferred during the import… Something to think about. Not exactly a deal breaker though.

I just checked your videos are up on the posts that have xfered – if it is just embed code from you tube there is no attachment.

I just saw your wordpress page – looking good! But I don’t think everything is xfered yet!

I have the same problem as el di pablo. some videos get copied, others don’t (and I do mean the embed code…)
not only do some codes just disappear, I also get this [youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7mIsN2JHPds”> instead of the embed code..

another quite negative point; all internal links still link to your blogspot.com site. you can change a few, but changing them all will cost you just a little bit too long :)

  6. El Di Pablo says:

Not everything is transferred. I clicked the view blog link at the top and selected to open it in a new window. That caused the transfer to pause. I had to refresh the page and select continue for it to keep going.

mmmm.. it seems like it stopped at 100/123 (post about the Kinks)

aaah. didn’t see your comment. refreshing helps :)

  9. Karl L. Gechlik says:

it seems any change to your blogger blog or the wordpress blog causes it to pause. like was said above just click continue and it will do just that. also if you have to close the browser window for any reason dont worry – you can start the import from where it left off. no risk of dups. wordpress is smart – kind of.

Jan as for the links to the original blogger site and the strange you tube issue; I will look into it a bit deeper after this consulting gig. If anyone finds an answer before that post it here dont email us! One.

Yup, we’re having the same effect. Some of our embed tags got chomped as well. Looks like this process isn’t perfect, its going to need some massaging and coddling to get going. We will keep you guys posted as the saga continues…
