In my opinion the best anti-virus is free. AVG and Kaspersky are both very very good. I’ve written a post on my own site about the best free Windows security software out there. Your readers I’m sure will find it of some use.

I am a big fan of sonicwall as well.

For my home Comodo has a small-ish footprint. So far so good.

I don't like Symantic or McAfee to be honest, and I've had problems with both.

Seemed to have had success with CA's eTrust enterprise version.

In the office we use a Sonicwall, but at home I use Comodo's firewall and it seems ok so far.

Yeah, it was McAfee 8.0, so I guess that explains it. We didn’t switch to Norton, we switched to Symantec Antivirus 10.0. They are the same company, but different programs. Symantec is more for enterprise use.

wierd i clicked the post and it took me to a diff site.

We switched from kaspirsky to macafee 851 last week it is so much better and easy to deploy via epo.

i agree with timur and admin as well.

i guess we will have to agree to disagree because i couldnt see using norton in an enterprise enviroment.

What version of Mcafee were you using. B/c the home version blows big time. Strictly enterprise 8.5.1 or better. Even 8.0 didn’t catch everything.

Perhaps it was a broad statement. Everyone has their preferences. In my opinion I just don’t find it as effective as Symantec.

el di pablo - Mcafee doesnt catch anything? i run this on 1000+ machines (8.5.1 enterprise) It catches everything!

It needs to be configured properly like selecting all the unwanted policy programs adn select to scan inside zip files etc.

It works so well i have installed it on all my machines - small footprint and it doesnt interfere with my day to day activities.

What have you seen it miss? Hey maybe your clients arent up to date!!! LOL!

No Anonymous! NO NO NO! Windows firewall is not a subsitute for a normal antivirus package. Most antivirus packages come with a firewall or port blocker that makes the windows firewall service redundant.

I have never heard of Agnitum but I have heard good things about Comodo.

timur, I agree with you about enterprise business. We use McAfee at my day job (I hate it, it doesn't catch a damn thing!), At my last company we switched to Symantec, which was way more effective.

Comodo is really good for home use though. If you read deeper into the article, it is recommended for the home users who let their license run out for their home antivirus.

As far as Windows firewall. It is okay for filtering incoming traffic. As far as filtering outbound traffic, it is sketchy at best. I prefer a 3rd party like Comodo or ZoneAlarm.

Well, freeware is enough if you are newbie in Internet and want just basic protection.
