Is there a GOOD FREE anti virus and firewall solution?
One of my pet peeves is people with an antivirus that is not up to date. Seriously now, why even have antivirus if you are not keeping it up to date?
For those of you out there that don’t have your antivirus up to date because you are too cheap to renew your license, don’t fret! You are in good hands. I am a cheap skate as well.
Comodo is offering some fabulous FREE security software. Two of them I personally recommend, Comodo Antivirus and Comodo Firewall! Both of them come with a free lifetime license, which means no renewal fees ever! This also means, you can stay secure and still be a cheap skate!

To quote their website, “Comodo is the 2nd largest Certification Authority for ensuring Identity
Trust & Assurance on the web.” Basically, they are one of the many company’s out their that secure websites for banks and other businesses that do online transactions. (Kind of like Verisign). They offer the free software to get their names out there, a sort of free branding advertising if you will. Don’t worry though, this software isn’t ad-ware, and you won’t be getting annoying “Buy me!’ advertisements.
I am currently using Comodo’s freeware on all of my computers at home, and they are working great! Uninstall your old, non-updated Antivirus now, and get Comodo in there right away! Don’t leave yourself open to an attack.

Well, freeware is enough if you are newbie in Internet and want just basic protection. But if you have some e-business, you’d better look at commercial products, that have development team, good support, frequent updates, etc. I use Agnitum Outpost Security Suite ob both of my desktop PC and notebook, and never regret about that small price paid for my protection. With all program features (effective firewall, antivirus engine, anti-spyware, anti-banner, anti-spam plugins)it looks really great.
P.S. Look at Firewall Leak Tester.

No Anonymous! NO NO NO! Windows firewall is not a subsitute for a normal antivirus package. Most antivirus packages come with a firewall or port blocker that makes the windows firewall service redundant.
But if you have nothing else… make sure its on and go download ANYTHING… AVG Free edition is good.
I have never heard of Agnitum but I have heard good things about Comodo.
We use Mcafee 851 strictly.

timur, I agree with you about enterprise business. We use McAfee at my day job (I hate it, it doesn’t catch a damn thing!), At my last company we switched to Symantec, which was way more effective.
Comodo is really good for home use though. If you read deeper into the article, it is recommended for the home users who let their license run out for their home antivirus.
As far as Windows firewall. It is okay for filtering incoming traffic. As far as filtering outbound traffic, it is sketchy at best. I prefer a 3rd party like Comodo or ZoneAlarm.

el di pablo – Mcafee doesnt catch anything? i run this on 1000+ machines (8.5.1 enterprise) It catches everything!
It needs to be configured properly like selecting all the unwanted policy programs adn select to scan inside zip files etc.
It works so well i have installed it on all my machines – small footprint and it doesnt interfere with my day to day activities.
What have you seen it miss? Hey maybe your clients arent up to date!!! LOL!

Perhaps it was a broad statement. Everyone has their preferences. In my opinion I just don’t find it as effective as Symantec.

i guess we will have to agree to disagree because i couldnt see using norton in an enterprise enviroment.
What version of Mcafee were you using. B/c the home version blows big time. Strictly enterprise 8.5.1 or better. Even 8.0 didn’t catch everything.

Yeah, it was McAfee 8.0, so I guess that explains it. We didn’t switch to Norton, we switched to Symantec Antivirus 10.0. They are the same company, but different programs. Symantec is more for enterprise use.

I don’t like Symantic or McAfee to be honest, and I’ve had problems with both.
Seemed to have had success with CA’s eTrust enterprise version.
In the office we use a Sonicwall, but at home I use Comodo’s firewall and it seems ok so far.

I am a big fan of sonicwall as well.
For my home Comodo has a small-ish footprint. So far so good.

Hey eldipablo
In my opinion the best anti-virus is free. AVG and Kaspersky are both very very good. I’ve written a post on my own site about the best free Windows security software out there. Your readers I’m sure will find it of some use.
