Can I stop Firefox’s session restore pop-up?
Dec 26th

I love Firefox. Mainly because it isn’t from Microsoft, but also because it is more secure that Internet Explorer, and has millions of cool plug-ins and skins so you can customize it. Your Firefox browser can be as individualized as you want it to be.
The one thing I can’t stand about it is it will not stop with the fricking “Session Restore” pop-up. I like the idea of it, but no matter how cleanly I close the program, after a while it will say that it wasn’t closed properly last time.
Do I want to restore the session? No… Not really I tell my computer, but like my two year old daughter, my computer doesn’t listen to me.
I found a way to stop it though. If you know a better, easier way us know in the comments:
1) In Firefox type about:config in the address bar and press enter.
2) You will get a list of stuff you’ve probably never seen before.
3) Find the string saying browser.sessionstore.enabled.
4) Right-click on it and select toggle. That changes the value from True to False.
5) Turning the value to False turns that annoying feature off.
Like I said, if you know a better way, please leave a comment in the comment section.

Can I make my digital camera wi-fi compatible? Ever heard of the Eye-FI SD Card?
Dec 24th
Our answer comes to us from Guest writer,
David Fried. Stay tuned for bio info on David and other AtA guests like Daniel from HackYourDay…
The Mac and PC compatible Eye-Fi SD memory card flawlessly adds Wi-Fi to any camera and boasts a respectable 2GB of memory. The free Eye-Fi service supports uploading to numerous photo based websites with the touch of a button; including Flickr, Shutterfly and Webshots to name a few. Setup is a snap as it takes about five minutes or so to program the card. From there your home free, just snap some pics and within a few minutes within the range of your router, the pictures will be available for viewing on the computer. For those are paranoid, no need to worry the site claims “photo transmission is secure and private.” However, a major flaw is the fact that the card doesn’t support hotspots. The price comes in at a non-bank breaking $100. But snapping photos and uploading in real time is worth the extra coin, especially since the Eye-Fi is not a battery-draining vampire. The card is built about as ruggedly as any SD weighing in at 0.1oz so no added weight to the camera. The ease of use is about as simple as using a normal SD care and if wires are an issues for you, the Eye-Fi SD card is a simple alternative.
Financial Help and Smarterchild as your personal assistant.
Dec 23rd
After a week out of the office at my Mac OsX server training I am totally swamped. Throw in holiday shopping, a new baby and AtA… Whoa boy!
I demoed and reviewed Mint.com. It does a great job of watching my finances. Then I messed around with Smarterchild as a virtual personal assistant.
Mint review excerpt- Being the type of guy that burns through money I jumped at the opportunity to review Mint. Mint is a finance tracking and budgeting platform much like Microsoft Money or Quicken. But the main difference is it is Online – if you don’t have a problem adding your banking information to Mint.com you can have access to a complete financial overview from any web browser.
Mint has been in Beta for about 3 months now and is showing somewhere in the neighborhood of 60,000 early adopters throwing in over 2 billion dollars of their hard earned accounts into Mint’s databases. 2 fricking billion dollars? That’s a lot of moolah…
I jumped right in, after thoroughly checking out the website and its history. I couldn’t just give my info to anyone – right? They have their security and safety information posted here (this should calm you down a bit). But I was immediately impressed. It allowed me to add 2 credit cards and all my accounts from HSBC in 4 or 5 clicks. It has some 1500 institutions in its system so it can grab your transactions with ease.
Smarterchild review excerpt- I have made a new friend. Well actually, I am becoming reacquainted with an old friend. Have you heard of Smarterchild? Smarterchild is an AimBot, an automated assistant that can be added to your instant messenger contacts. It can help you remember things, lookup headlines, find out about local movies, and so on. Now that AIM has been integrated into Gmail this might be a great combination for turning SmarterChild into your virtual Personal Assistant.
How can I recover my wordpress password?
Dec 22nd
A few days ago I was trying to set up WordPress on my domain and since it’s in Hungarian – Fantastico my webhost’s auto-installer couldn’t quite cope with it. I needed to install it manually.
At the end of the process I got a random password. Of course the inevitable happened. I forgot to change it and logged off.
I was left with a perfectly set up blog ready for me, but I was left to stare hopelessly at the login screen like it was written in another language.
During my morning browsing I stumbled on to a script called emergency.php, which I found over at village-idiot.org. All you need is the ability to upload files to your site and to know the name of the administrator (usually admin) and you can reset the password. I know some of you are gasping…
But please use this AtA knowlege only for good! With that being said here is the uber simple walk through:
Just upload the file to the directory containing wp-config.php and run the script from your browser by going to http://www.myblog.com/emergency.php obviously replacing myblog.com with your actual sites name.
You can then enter the user name and the new password and it will, by magic, be reset. After you’re done though, don’t forget to delete the file, since anyone could run the script and reset your password!
Is there a Wi-Fi USB adapter that can extend my Pc or Mac conection range?
Dec 22nd
There sure is! hField Technologies’ Wi-Fire is a compact high-performance USB Wi-Fi Adapter for Mac and PC that extends the Wi-Fi range upwards of 1,000 feet. Being a college student, I am blessed with a blanketed campus, offering a strong Wi-Fi signal wherever I go, right? …. Well, wrong. Dreaded dead spots exist and, to my dismay, my dorm room seems to be the epicenter of a dead spot, a barren wasteland of former Wi-Fi signal. My solutions included hardwiring—too easy. Setting up a router? Forbidden. And as this epic conundrum reached a head, an epiphany hit me like a ton of bricks (as they tend to do). However, this epiphany came in the form of a small device called the Wi-Fire from a startup company that I had never heard of. The device triples the power of the internal receptor, making it virtually impossible not to get a signal, regardless of where you are.

On my current winter break, my internet cut out on me and, although I am not condoning it, I continued surfing without a problem off of an unsecured network down the street. The device uses a directional antenna with an arrow to ensure a strong signal. According to hf site, “the Wi-Fire provides interoperability with any 802.11 b/g access point and multiplies the effectiveness of wireless networks allowing users to connect to a WiFi network from up to 1,000 feet, more than three times the range of Airport cards and other 802.11 adapters, at significantly higher speeds, and even in locations where no wireless signal could be detected previously.” If you’re looking to improve your internet connectivity and thereby improve your efficiency in any setting whether it’s the airport, park or even dorm room, look no further than this valuable gizmo from hField technologies, Inc. The device is 3 x 4 x 3/8 inches in size. It folds up for transportation and connects to the Mac and PC using USB. The device retails for $79 in the U.S. and can be purchased through their site at hField.com.
