The Ultimate Guide to Being Married to a Nerd!
Throughout history, science has dissected the inner working of every race of man. We’ve disassembled soldiers, warriors, policemen, firemen, ninjas, samurais, and thanks to shows like Discovery’s “Dirty Jobs”, we’ve gotten an intimate look at their day to day. But what about the inner mind workings of today’s Nerd? We are today’s code soldiers, and tomorrow’s battlefield soldiers as remote war tech makes it’s way.
What makes us tick? What do we think about during those lulled moments at the dinner table?
These questions are most often asked by the significant others of the aforementioned Nerds. There has not yet been a guide to the inner workings of the Nerds’ mind, until now.
The folks over at RandsInRepose have addressed this concern, here is a snippet:
Understand your nerd’s relation to the computer. It’s clichéd, but a nerd is defined by his computer, and you need to understand why.
First, a majority of the folks on the planet either have no idea how a computer works or they look at it and think “it’s magic”. Nerds know how a computer works. They intimately know how a computer works. When you ask a nerd, “When I click this, it takes awhile for the thing to show up. Do you know what’s wrong?” they know what’s wrong. A nerd has a mental model of the hardware and the software in his head. While the rest of the world sees magic, your nerd knows how the magic works, he knows the magic is a long series of ones and zeros moving across your screen with impressive speed, and he knows how to make those bits move faster.
The nerd has based his career, maybe his life, on the computer, and as we’ll see, this intimate relationship has altered his view of the world. He sees the world as a system which, given enough time and effort, is completely knowable.
This guide is a great read, and a must have for any husbands, wives, girlfriends, boyfriends, and friends of a proclaimed Nerd. You can read the whole guide here.

My apologies, I didn’t realize they were different. What’s wrong with Nerd though? Kinda makes you think of those sour candies and the cute little characters on the package…

I am running Windows XP on my home computer. I have Windows Movie Maker. I connect my VCR camera into the computer through the video card using an s-video cord. When I start up Movie Maker everything seems to go fine, I put all the settings in correctly but when I start Capture Video, the picture comes through but not the sound. It says in the instructions that the sound should be coming through and in fact it provides controls so that the volume can be adjusted. The mute is off and all systems seem to be working but no sound. Can you help?
