Do you want a free 2gb Memory Upgrade? Is there a easy way to find out what memory my computer needs?
So we met with the good fellows over @ crucial.com during the Digital Life Show. Check out the bottom of this article on how to enter our free memory module give-a-way. Crucial told us about their new Memory picking do-hickie applimacation to help users find the correct memory for their computer. We all know how annoying it can be to order the wrong ram only to get your computer open and see that it won’t boot. Crucial wants to do away with the headaches associated with picking out memory.
We went their homepage and tried the new application out. We first just used the drop down menus to put in several different systems and got the correct recommendations every time! Crucial spices up their offering with also offering to scan your machine. You know I had to try it out and see what it recommends. It also worked wonderfully but took a little longer than the first method.
The wizard installed a active-x control and withing seconds it told me how much memory was installed, in which banks and then it went on to show me what my max ram can be and in what configurations it could be applied in. It also shows prices and a scale of bad to excellent performance.
We commend Crucial on a job WELL DONE! This will make opening your machine up o find out what kind of Ram you need and how you have it configured a thing of the past.
We had Commodore64 run over to the website and give it a shot with his Mac and here are his findings:
Ok, tried the application on my mac powerbook 1.5ghz 12-inch. i was redirected to a mac based model picker. Quickly drilled down to my mac and I must say, the prices are ultra competitive. Got 3 different sizes, but i’m pretty sure they know what they’re doing. the credibility factor really kicks in here. Going to remote into my pc server to try the app with 2 feet on the ground, but the mac process was pretty painless as well. Im pretty sure this can be attributed to mac’s lack of open architecture (no clones like pc, so no variances in memory, motherboards, speeds, etc.) which crucial is completely poised to capitalize on as a memory purveyor. Ok browsed to the site in FF on a pc and receive the following message: Browser Incompatibility
The online Crucial System Scanner requires Internet Explorer browser and the use of ActiveX® technology to scan your system. If you use a different Web browser, such as Opera™ or Mozilla’s Firefox™, please use our 112KB downloadable System Scanner instead.
hmm, 112 kb seems very lightweight, lets give it a shot… The application ran very quickly and successfully determined a lot of memory info for my system including slots available/slots filled, and memory capacity and potential. But then the strangest thing happened:
We’re sorry.
Crucial currently does not have any compatible upgrades available for your particular system. If you have questions or would like further support, please contact our support department.
I gave it a go on a newer machine and had no problem. So for newbies who are trying to identify a lot of crucial (Edit: no pun intended) (Double Edit: Hell Yeah Pun Intended!) info which will aid them in their search for memory, this tool is great. So as a standalone tool, i was enlightened by the various bits of info that are being reported by my motherboard and processor. but i still have to go find an apparently extinct type of memory chip. But id have to add that i had long forgotten what type of memory i have, and was not looking forward to opening the case and kneeling way low below my desk, so this saved me the hassle.
Overall verdict: AWESOME! The application and website are great but they work a lot better with IE than FF. The custom machine configurations sometimes confuzzle the system but you can always use the drop downs to figure it out.
From Crucial:
Crucial will provide a 2GB custom memory upgrade (up to $300) for the winner. Since nobody wants to win a prize they can’t use in their own system, just send me the winner’s contact info and I’ll work with them to find a compatible 2GB memory upgrade. Easy as that. They’ll just hop on the Crucial System Scanner tool to find out what memory is compatible with their system.
In honor of our review and their new application we will be giving away a FREE 2gb memory module for your system.
You heard us right Crucial has teamed up with AskTheAdmin to get you a FREE 2GB Memory module for your desktop or laptop (up to $300) All you have to do is:

I got this PowermacG5 Dual 2.5 thinking 64bit PPC would last a year or two before Apple switched to intel. Now its practically worthless.
I’m still stuck with it though…and the memory would make it just a little less painful…
So whatever memory module fits in the Dual G5 2.5 would be great: I think its DDR PC3200 or PC4000, but I’m not 100%, better get over to crucial and use their dohicky!
Thanks!

I know exactly what I need, I need a nice DDR2 PC-4200 set of 2GB of ram. That way my machine will be flying fast and enjoying the good life. This module will be put to good use, the use of running VM’s full time, I like to run an AD enviroment in VM and we all know how much ram VM’s require :).

Nah….don’t need the memory. Plus wouldn’t I be ineligible because I am affiliated with aTa???
I just love it how everyone comes out when there is swag on the line.
Don’t get me wrong, at the end of my VMWare cert classes, I was first on line to get my new laptop backpack. I have it sitting right next to me right now!!!
If only they were giving out VCP’s that day too….. :-(

Heh. I guess I jumped the gun. Let’s try this again:
I would love this upgrade for my MacBook. For, you see, I am but a lowly college student (computer engineering). It’s hard to spend money on a fair amount of RAM when you have to buy books, pay rent AND eat sometimes.
Tell me, what good is an educational AutoDesk license if you can hardly launch the beast that is Inventor? Surely you could show some mercy. A boy’s only trying to make it in this big scary world

I am in desperate need of memory so I tried using the model select but could not find 48 YO FEMALE1959.
My hopes were dashed so I’ll have to continue my use of external memory chips–19 YO FEMALE1987 and 46 YO MALE 1961. (total 345 lbs)
If I could only better utilize my memory DDR2 PC2-5300,DDR2 PC2-4200, I wouldn’t have to carry my external memories with me everywhere I go.
Please help me lighten my load. Award me the honor of the 2 gigs of memory. (much lighter weight)

By giving me the memory, you’ll have some benefit:
1. Verify that the email address matching system supports the use of plus addressing in gmail (I’m using xxxx+ata@gmail.com to sign up).
2. The memory will be used on not only one, but two computers, all using DDR-RAM (which means, they’ll be used for a longer period of time)
3. Have a chance to think about the not so simple situation I’m in if I got the memory, with two computers of different generations, which memory module is the most suitable? 1xA7V266 with 2×256MB memory, leaving only free memory slot, support a maximum size of 1GB memory
1xA8N-SLI with 2×1GB memory, leaving 2 free memory slot, and adding memory will slow down the memory timing due to the memory controller on the Athlon 64 3000+. (my own suggestion, let 512MB ram to be used elsewhere, but you can give a better suggestion)
4. Try to ship memory to the other side of the globe, see if you’ve chosen the right delivery service for it to arrive intact

So, I have completed Step 1 of the required steps in retrieving said memory, and now this would be steps 2 and 3 combined….below:
(Step 2)
-According to crucial.com’s scan, my machine, my beast of a machine (in which I design t-shirt graphics on) can hold DDR2 PC2-4200,DDR2 PC2-6400,DDR2 PC2-5300 with a maximum of 1GB per slot.*
-Currently, I am housing DDR PC2-3200 RAM if that helps any.
(Step 3)
So, what’s the deal with homework? You’re not at home doing work! You’re not working for the home! The home isn’t working for you!
So, what’s the deal?
No really, I need a memory upgrade. And trust me, it’ll be a heck of a lot easier explaining to my boss that I WON the memory than having to present a proposal, in power point mind you, detailing why we need to purchase more RAM. (in which he’ll respond with, “what’s RAM? like Dodge RAM?”) Trust me, I need this!!
Always enjoying ATA!!

two words: 1998 computer with a 64mb INTEGRATED video card……(okay not two words but whatever)
HP – Compaq Pavilion 364n Desktop/PC is my computer and it allows only a 1GB, 184-pin DIMM, DDR PC2700 memory module per slot, which the computer has two of.
question mark: I have to post my ADDRESS?

lol that was pretty funny. No YOU DO NOT HAVE TO POST YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS!
You should enter it in the field on the right. That will sign you up for our email updates and give us your address so we can enter you in the contest.
After doing this you will have TWO chances to win instead of just one from posting a comment.
I think i am making this harder than it has to be :)

Hey Ask The Admin! From one admin, to another, I have to say I enjoy your posts about different tricks about the Windows OS. I really enjoyed the “how to restart faster” article, because my home PC would always have Steam giving me the old end my process window!
I have submitted my email to the mailing list, and I hope I win =)
The 2gb memory upgrade would really help me enjoy my home PC when I come home from working on computers for 8 hours. The only game I can run with good FPS is counter-strike!

I’d really like 2GB of PC-3200 DDR RAM, please. Here’s why:
1) It’s my birthday on the 31st, and 2 gigs would make the best birthday present ever.
2) I live in rip-off Britain where everything is twice as expensive as in the States, and there’s no way I’d otherwise be able to afford 2 gigs of RAM. (Don’t worry, postage isn’t very expensive)
3) Here’s a joke from England for you: a nun is having a bath when there’s a knock at the door. Concerned, she asks “Who is it?”. The person replies “It’s the blind man. Can I come in?” The nun says “OK then”, and the man comes in, looks at her, and says “Nice body, where do you want me to hang the blind?” Not massively hilarious but you might like it…
