Can I Open Office 2007 Files On Older Versions Of Office?

Written by Karl L. Gechlik | AskTheAdmin.com on September 20, 2007 – 4:42 pm -

Hey There Cheapskate!

So you say Microsoft has pulled a fast one on you? You have been running office 2000 with no complaints for 5 or 6 years now. What’s that? They are forcing you to upgrade because you can’t read the fancy smancy new file formats? They are something like docx and xlsx…

Don’t fret, you can keep using your outdated Micro$oft office products and open these new file types - Wait for it…. Wait for it… For Free! And imagine that MS has buried the information, but we found it at the link below.

There is a MS update available here.
Obviously they are not going to hype and promote this - it would stifle their sales worse than XP is hurting Vista!

From Microsoft’s website:

Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2007 File Formats

Open, edit, and save documents, workbooks, and presentations in the file formats new to Microsoft Office Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2007.

Users of the Microsoft Office XP and 2003 programs Word, Excel, or PowerPoint—please install all High-Priority updates from Microsoft Update before downloading the Compatibility Pack.

By installing the Compatibility Pack in addition to Microsoft Office 2000, Office XP, or Office 2003, you will be able to open, edit, and save files using the file formats new to Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2007. The Compatibility Pack can also be used in conjunction with the Microsoft Office Word Viewer 2003, Excel Viewer 2003, and PowerPoint Viewer 2003 to view files saved in these new formats. For more information about the Compatibility Pack, see Knowledge Base article 924074.

Note: If you use Microsoft Word 2000 or Microsoft Word 2002 to read or write documents containing complex scripts, please see http://support.microsoft.com/kb/925451 for information to enable Word 2007 documents to be displayed correctly in your version of Word.

Administrators: The administrative template for the Word, Excel, and PowerPoint converters contained within the Compatibility Pack is available for download.

They don’t mention it on their site, but the Office 2007 conversion utility also works for the non-standard office products like Visio and Project as well. It is only labeled to work with Word, Excel and Outlook.

docXConverter 2.0 allows you to easily open and use files saved in the new Word 2007 format docx and in the new Excel 2007 format xlsx, even if the programs installed on your computer are not capable of opening docx or xlsx files.

docXConverter reads the docx or xlsx file you want to access, converts it to RTF (Rich Text Format) or CSV (Comma separated values) that are easily read by standard computer programs and instructs one of your programs to open the converted file. All this is done seamlessly and does not get in your way. The initial set-up of docXConverter is done automatically; you can be up and running in seconds. You can also adjust the settings according to your specific configurations or needs. See: http://www.panergy-software.com/products/docxconverter/features.html

What is preserved in conversion that are easily read by standard computer programs and instructs? is it a specific configurations or needs?

How to save/convert the rtf files that are generated with ms office 2007, to older versions (ms office 2000 or Ms office 2003)

Save As from office 2007 or Use the above tool to open it and save it from an older version.
