Quick Wipe Hard Drive’s Using Lysol
Written by Karl L. Gechlik | AskTheAdmin.com on August 24, 2007 – 2:59 pm -
Have you ever needed to quickly blank a hard drive? Now I’m not talking about for security purposes, for that I like using DBAN. No I’m just talking about one quick wipe down to erase the drive? I do, especially when I really want to test a disk image. I want no previous instances of anything on the drive, to really be sure my image is perfect.
Well, at my school they have a really old, yet effective program, called Lysol. I tried Googling it, and I couldn’t find any place to download it. I did find some forums where people mentioned it, but no place for download. Well, it’s time to rectify that! I obtained a CD ISO of the program, and I am making it available for everyone here!
Lysol is pretty friggin’ awesome. It will wipe a drive in about 5 seconds! That’s right, only 5 seconds! (like I said, this is not good for security wipes). The iso itself is less than 3MB in size. It is small, but very effective. Now if you or your friends are looking for a quick disk wiper, then send them on over here to AskTheAdmin!

You got a quick disk wiper? How quick is quick?
By El Di Pablo on Aug 24, 2007 | Reply
Lysol will wipe a drive in 5 seconds. Is that quick enough for you?

yes sir it is. just ko’s the directory structure or what? partitions are all deleted?
By El Di Pablo on Aug 24, 2007 | Reply
Right, all partitions gone. All that is left is unallocated space. Like the article says though, this isn’t a secure disk wiping utility. The FBI could easily recover files off it. If you need to securely wipe a drive, Derek’s Boot and Nuke (Available as a part of the Ultimate boot CD 4 Windows) is good for that.

@el di pablo: Thanks for the tool, will check it out.
@ everyone: I’d like to recommend Roadkil’s Disk Wipe at
[http://www.roadkil.net/] .
You can write random data or blank a disk with it, and it’s free.
I checked the drive afterwards with Runtime Software’s Get Data Back [http://www.runtime.org/faq_gdb.htm], and a few other tools, R-Studio, On-Track Easy Recovery and wasn’t able to find any traces.

Thanks For The Info Dan!
I use DBAN just like El Di Pablo for when those secure wipes are necessary.
Lysol is great for making sure you are testing your image and not some garbage on the drive.
We have used Roadkil’s apps before and they are effective and most of all FREE!

I’ve used Roadkill’s disk wipe too. It is one of the many tools you can find on The Ultimate Boot CD For Windows.

“just in time for my 8 machines to go on ebay” - Do NOT use a product like this for a machine you are selling.
You need something like DBAN (http://dban.sourceforge.net) to securely wipe a drive you are giving away or selling.
