How to Use Gmail on your Windows Mobile device to replace your SMTP server- and no additional downloads - Free and 10 easy steps!
Written by Karl L. Gechlik | AskTheAdmin.com on August 24, 2007 – 10:34 am -Hi Ladies and Gents,
Commodore here to bring you a quick tip. I know I haven’t written in a while, but I haven’t forgotten about aTa, just been working on some back-end stuff here if anything at all. But this is a tip I’m sure will benefit lots of users of WM5 devices who have trouble with their email. I’ve gone from the 8125 to the 8525, hoping that the issue would be resolved in the 85, but it hasnt. So now I’d like to fill everyone in on how to achieve this using a FREE Gmail workaround, which will allow you to send email from your phone, without any additional programs to install in 10 easy, painless steps.
Step 1. Create a Free Gmail account, and in Settings, under Pop/Forwarding, enable the pop mail feature.
Step 2. Open your email app in WM5, go to Tools -> New Account.
Step 3. Enter your email address in the field. WM5 will attempt to automatically discover the settings which could go either way. Click next.
Step 4. Type your full name, your full email address as the user name (ie. blahblah@gmail.com), and your password.
Step 5. Choose Account type “POP3″.
Step 6. Your incoming mail server is pop.gmail.com. Your outgoing mail server is smtp.gmail.com.
Step 7. Click Options -> Click Next, skipping the “connect and check for messages every:” screen.
Step 8. Check the box that says “Incoming mail server requires SSL authentication”
Step 9. Check the box that says “Outgoing mail requires authentication”.
Step 10. Uncheck the box that says “Use seperate settings”
Skip through to the end of the dialog and you should be all set. So far Gmail is one of the only outgoing servers that work with my 8525 Hermes. If you know any others, hit us up.
Update: You can use the outgoing settings in this how-to for all the rest of your mail accounts, I used this outgoing configuration with my Optonline, Mac, and Corporate email and it works like a charm. Let us know how it worked out for you. - C64

I just used the steps in this article, and it didn’t work for me, it says “messages cannot be downloaded to your mobile device”. What gives Admin?

hi Lawrence, thanks for writing in, Did you make sure to use seperate settings for your other emails? is it your gmail that won’t come thru, or is it one of your other accounts?
By Lawrence G on Aug 24, 2007 | Reply
It’s the other accounts…

Lawrence, make sure you have clicked options on step 4/4 (in the mail options) and make sure “outgoing mail requires authentication” and also “use seperate settings” is checked and that the seperate settings are filled in with your gmail outgoing server, login and password.

I seem to have missed that step, but now it works GREAT!
Thank you Admin, keep up the good work, I’ve been an avid reader for a while, and this is the first time I’ve asked a question of you guys. Ultimately fast response. Thanks a million!

Hey commodore - any way to make the Gmail account the default application when sending email?
I’ve got a iPAQ 6955 and the camera app has a link to email pictures - but it always defaults to the Outlook outbox, which only gets sent when I synch my iPAQ with my desktop PC. I’d like to be able to send the pic directly through gmail, on the WI-FI without waiting to come home to my desktop PC.
thanks
Pascal

Karl,
Unfortunately, I am using WM5 that came on my HP iPAQ.
I did try to make the update to WM6 myself (don’t feel bad - this was decided before I saw your post!) and suffice it to say that it didn’t work and my iPAQ is on its way to HP to get re-flashed with factory software.
I just might give up and just go to web-based gmail instead of trying to be too fancy.
thanks for the answer anyway
Pascal
