Amazon challenges PayPal and Google Checkout. Is this going to be the war of Goliath vs. Goliath vs. Goliath?
Michael Arrington of Tech Crunch writes:
“Look for a launch announcement by Amazon this week or next of a new web service around payments, adding to their S3 (storage), EC2 (virtual server) and other services. They’ve been quietly testing the service, which will compete with PayPal and Google Checkout, for a few weeks. It is an extension of the existing Amazon Payments, which allows third parties selling items on Amazon’s extended network to receive payments from buyers.”
This will truly be a battle royale. HUGE. I wonder what impacts this type of thing can (if any) have on their respective stock prices. In any case I place my bets on google for who will emerge victorious in this battle of all battles to end all battles (but not the war). Anyone else have any predictions? drop a comment below…

PayPal will remain dominant for a long time, I’m sure. But I think Amazon has more of a chance than Google. I am a Google Checkout user, and I’ve never even used Amazon before. But more of the population uses Amazon, and never even heard of Google’s shopping experience.

i only used google checkout once for the free ten bucks. i tried to use it instead of merchant services on a ecommerce site also for its no fee transactions. people didnt use it and requested alternative methods. as solomon said amazon has a better rep for handling $$$ so lets see if they can grab ANY market share. They better be giving something away to attract users though.

I think people might be sick of the rigidity that Paypal has demonstrated, but i can also see how people might feel safer working with Paypal – I’m a perfect example. :) Bring on the competition

i agree with solomon above pp will be around for a long time to come but as the commodore said bring on the competition. hopefully there fees will drop. btw i striclty use pp for ten yrs now.

It seems like PayPal made it just fine and that Google Checkout is still not where Google wants it. However, I see PayPal screwing up now. They started closing accounts left and right – mainly from people who were selling recurring services using PayPal subscriptions. I don’t know if they really make the right decision?!
