Great insigh annoymus and it definately crossed my mind as well.

To start with - Yes this is not the optimal setup for a large scale wifi network.

But as for the problem not being an epidemic - I will just wait and see come september. If we dont start hearing about more and more networks affected then we can write it off. unless of course we can get apple to release some updates.

This is a fairly common "Easy" setup that a lot of campuses employ. Any other College IT Stff around?

How will this affect your network if at all?

From what I have heard, Duke uses the same set-up as my University (SFU) which is to have a small pool of internal IP's that the wireless user connects to. They then receive authentication from the server, their MAC address and log-in is recorded and they are then allowed to access the network.

This is an incredibly dumb-ass (from the user point of view) set-up that causes no end of problems. Our network is "down" on a regular basis (for years now!) and it's always because of this wonky authentication system.

Since it's been a day now and no other reports of this kind of nonsense are happening, I would suggest it's Duke's problem and that the solution will turn out to be to use standard set-ups instead of these kinds of clumsy workarounds.
