This is an incredibly dumb-ass (from the user point of view) set-up that causes no end of problems. Our network is “down” on a regular basis (for years now!) and it’s always because of this wonky authentication system.

Since it’s been a day now and no other reports of this kind of nonsense are happening, I would suggest it’s Duke’s problem and that the solution will turn out to be to use standard set-ups instead of these kinds of clumsy workarounds.
