Question: Laptop batteries – What is the best method for long battery life?
We all own laptops and sometimes are away from electricity for some time and carry multiple batteries. I hate running out of juice and i really HATE batteries that last a few months and then aren’t worth the time to even charge them. Dropping from 4 hours of run time to sub 20 minutes. We have gotten used to it over the years and learned a thing or two about life cycles and max amounts of charges. But we still notice some laptop batteries degrade a lot faster then others. We have had a few readers write in and ask about best practices.
Do you leave your battery in all the time? Does it depend on the model? My cell phones says to leave it plugged in as much as possible is this the same for my laptop? Are they both Lithium Ion? Are you suppose to leave them full or half charged for storage? Is there a way to resurect a battery that wont hold a charge?
Stay tuned boys and girls for the exciting answers… Post your answers or responses in the comments! And tell us what you thing of the new format while your @ it!

Edit: Update my batteries are deader then before (no charge @ all) nothing brought them back.
Verdict: Don’t leave your batteries in your laptop while connected to power for extended periods of time or it will degrade the life of it.
I will post a full update and my findings shortly…

When using a laptop as your main machine that is constantly on the battery should not be left in for long periods of time.
Batteries come with a “life cycle” this is usually the amount of full charges/discharges the battery can sustain. Continuously sending juice to the battery will decrease its life span.
The laptop when running on batteries will over time discharge it. Remove the battery – making sure that it is charged to around 40% and store it in a dry, warm place. Ensure that it is wrapped protectively and nothing will be dropped on it.
The battery should be re-installed every 3-4 weeks and allowed to fully discharge. Leaving a battery in storage for longer than this without using could cause the battery to fully discharge as the circuitry of the battery itself consumes power.
Obviously you need to remember that when you have removed the battery from your laptop – the ups features it offers you is no longer functional.
Make sure to plug your laptop into an uninterrupted power source (UPS) not directly the wall or power stip.
as for the bringing back a battery from the dead ill let you know when i update the post.
i got an experiment brewing in my freezer. If you dont hear back from me in 24 hours…
