Question To Let Marinate Overnight
Written by Karl L. Gechlik | AskTheAdmin.com on June 19, 2007 – 7:05 pm -
I picked this question for the Question of the day for tomorrow. Post your answers in the comments. Can someone help Susie from California? She says she is blond and lost her password. I think she is trying to get at her husbands browsing history… Whatever she needs AskTheAdmin’s help and that is what she is going to get…
We will post our answer in the AM… In the meantime you try to help lil’ ol Susie.
Susie says
“I lost my BIOS password and I can not get into my laptop. It is an IBM Think Pad X Series running Windows XP SP1 and I have left it off with no battery for almost 6 months. The battery died but still after i plug it in it asks for the BIOS password on boot. HELP I NEED MY DATA! I am blonde and it isn’t helping me any.”
You can’t make this stuff up! You can exaggerate a little but you cant make this stuff up!

I’m pretty sure she needs to either remove the cmos battery for a few seconds, or needs to use the cmos reset jumper on the motherboard to clear cmos and get rid of the password.
To michele…If there is a bios password she will not be able to get in there to change the password.

IBM Thinkpads have the ability to yank out the bios battery. Cold booting to the bios wont matter, you need to disconnect the battery.
Go to http://www.ibm.com/support and find your machine type, hint: it’s on the bottom of the laptop, and try to find battery removal instructions.
Might take a bit of searching, don’t get frustrated, but the information is there.
Best of luck.

Slothman that is the best advice of all. Both points.
Google is the admins best friend (right up there with the command line!)
And Dont get fustrated. Walk away count to ten smoke drink do something productive… whatever just dont let yourself get to the point you are pulling your hair out your head becuase you will do more damage then good.
Its better to take a fiver or sleep on it if its an option which we all know sometimes its not.
