Video games don't influence our lives. If they did we would be running around dark rooms listening to computer generated music and eating pills... Oh.

Defragmenting on XP - do i have to? How often should i defrag?

Written by Karl L. Gechlik | AskTheAdmin.com on June 21, 2007 – 8:25 pm -

This question comes from Alex in New York City and Hong in Indonesia.

They both want to know in there own ways how often do you need to defragement your Windows XP installation.

While you are at it can you explain what fragmentation is? why is it bad? how do you defrag and when should you?

What about on Mac’s and on Linux Distros? Defrag any one?

I was just looking at a map of our last 15 minutes of traffic - we are rapidly spreading across Asia, Russia, Australia and Canada now!

If you are from some far away land - leave us a comment! In english in russian in chinese - san script click-pop-click whatever.

Alright defragmenting XP is easy as pie. not that making pie is easy. Computer Management —> Disk Defragmenter —-> Defragment Drive.

    Period.

No more closing programs and stopping everything bullshit. Just know it wont defrag files that are open.

    Holla

YUP you need to defrag or use a 3rd party app to do it on a schedule. as a scheduled task. Every few months or so or after heavy file copy/delete/download etc.
