Ten Takes on T-Mobile and Comments from TheAdmin
May 30th
Helooooooo There out in Internet land. My great Tmobile rep just dropped off my Wing:
I like it but I am not in love with it. Here is the scoop:
Overall it seems like the dash’s big brother. This is the first time I am using WM6 with the touch screen. My dash has been on Smartphone 06 for a while now so I have gotten used to most of the wow factor from built in voice command, contact and messaging filtering – Filtering contacts as you go as you type either names or numbers is a-mazing! Touch screen is nice, as well as the bigger keyboard but the size hurts. POP3 sync can be put down to 5min which is great compared to previous versions (for those still not using push)

I cant throw this in my pocket like my well scratched up dash
Ten Takes on T-Mobile Wing From Gizmodo. The T-Mobile Wing is on one hand, another HTC smartphone with that same old HTC form factor. On the other, it’s the first Windows Mobile 6 Professional phone on this side of the pond…either pond.
So what did the media think about the Wing? Hit the jump for our Frankenreview: where we mix together the best of Mobileburn, LAPTOP, Boy Genius Report, CNET, Pocketnow, PCMag, Mobilitysite, infoSync, PCWorld, Engadget and, of course…ourselves.
MobileBurn
While the device is still a bit hefty, at 169g (6.7oz), the form factor is a bit less monoblock in shape. The front and back faces of the Wing have been slightly sculpted in an effort to thin the device out and improve the feel of the phone when held in the user’s hand.
Laptop
…the Wing [is] perfectly suitable for e-mail hounds and Internet junkies. But when you’re outside of Wi-Fi range, you’re left with T-Mobile’s occasionally spotty EDGE network, which delivers relatively slow data rates of about 100 Kbps.
BoyGeniusReport
Obviously the biggest selling point is that Windows Mobile 6 Professional is loaded right on.
CNET
Disappointingly, the new operating system didn’t bring any major enhancements to Windows Media Player Mobile. And once again, unlike the other carriers, T-Mobile does not offer a music or video service to get new tunes or clips. That said, the player supports a number of popular audio and video formats
PocketNow
Windows Mobile 6 Professional also comes with the full version of Microsoft Voice Command 1.6. That means you get voice recognition and text-to-speech features. Some of my favorites are the ability to read incoming text messages and email subjects into my Bluetooth headset, as well as announcing incoming callers by their name … you can also speak commands to the…There’s no need to record voice tags, the software just recognizes plain speech automatically.
PCMag
The Dash makes do with the less-capable WM6 Standard OS, no touch screen or stylus, and a smaller (but more accessible) keyboard. On the other hand, it’s slimmer and lighter than the Wing and packs in the same CPU and Wi-Fi. It also costs less. We still prefer the Dash with Windows Mobile 6
MobilitySite
The lackluster processor is my only true complaint. I am sure that a faster processor would have me complaining about the battery life though. Most of the applications I through at it ran speedy and without hitch.
InfoSyncWorld
The only time we saw a real hit to the Wing’s performance was switching between landscape and portrait mode, which can take a couple of seconds.
PCWorld
The Wing lasted for the full 10 hours that marks the ceiling of the PC World Test Center’s battery life evaluation. Its performance thus matches…our most recently tested top performers.
Engadget
…if you’re a T-Mobile customer, if you’re willing to plunk down this thing is kind of a no-brainer.
Gizmodo
So all in all the hardware’s been improved with minor–but noticeable–changes, and the software’s been improved with major and definitely noticeable changes. Is it worth it for you to upgrade if you already have an MDA? Yes, if you really want the benefits of Windows Mobile 6.
Mark Wilson
Seems like a solid upgrade, but nothing “new”.

100% Fix for the Svchost.exe “99%” Issue
May 30th

So it looks like Microsoft has heard us belly aching and now has released a fix. I will not be applying it until I either see more issues or read otherwise. Here is the information – you decide:
You receive an access violation error and the system may appear to become unresponsive when you try to install an update from Windows Update or from Microsoft Update

Article ID : 927891
Last Review : May 24, 2007
Revision : 10.0
Technical update: May 22, 2007
Microsoft has released a Microsoft Security Advisory on this problem for IT professionals. The security advisory contains additional security-related information about this problem. To view the security advisory, visit the following Microsoft Web site:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/advisory/927891.mspx (http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/advisory/927891.mspx)Note This article discusses the MSI component fixes only. This fix is one component of a two-part fix that includes a Windows Update client software update. These updates will be deployed automatically using Windows Update in May 2007 and June 2007. However, some customers may select to manually install these updates. To fully address the unresponsive system issue, both this fix for MSI must be installed and the Windows Update client must be updated to version 3.0. When you install the MSI fix and the new client, process-monitoring tools may still show CPU usage at near 100 percent. However, the system should still be responsive and should not lock up. If another task requires CPU cycles, they will be shared. However, if the system is idle, MSI will use the full cycles that are available to complete in the shortest time. If another task is running at the same time as MSI, the system may run slightly more slowly. However, the computer should still be responsive. Remember that you must install the MSI fix and the new client to address unresponsive or locked systems. It is expected that process-monitoring tools may still show CPU usage at near 100 percent, but computer unresponsiveness is not expected. If you watch the process monitor, you may still see CPU usage at near 100 percent during some scans if the computer is otherwise idle. This is expected behavior.
Important Many instances of the Svchost.exe process may be running on a Windows-based computer. These Svchost.exe processes control certain tasks. The software update that is described in this article is only designed to address the problem that is mentioned in the “Symptoms” section. Other problems that you experience with Svchost.exe may require alternative resolutions or troubleshooting steps.

Windows Update Broke My Machine (svchost.exe — application error), and How to Fix It Kinda…
May 30th
One of my Windows XP SP 2 machines on my domain started spitting the following message at me after logon. Any choice this dialog gives me that I choose, the machine becomes unusable. If I move the box out of the way the machines operation continues normally. The dialog just hangs there
svchost.exe — application error the instruction at “0×745f2780″ reference memory at “0×00000000″. the memory could not be ‘read’
Looking into the event log yielded the following:
Faulting application svchost.exe, version 5.1.2600.2180, faulting module msi.dll, version 3.1.4000.2435, fault address 0×00012780
I Googled it and searched around some other sources and found others with similar issues. Now, how I fixed it and why it broke in the first place are two very separate things.
First I read alot about it having to do with WSUS and Office updates which we are doing. So this is what I did:
- Reboot into safemode
- Rename the directory SoftwareDistribution to SdistOLD (In your \windows directory)
- Delete the files in your prefetch folder also in windows.
- Turn off auto update service (disable)
- If you are using WSUS turn off classifications for Office products.
- Reboot normally and if the error does not show up do a windows update from the website.
- If the error came back reboot and try again.
- Turn auto updates back on… Leave off office updates.
This has solved my problems but I now do my office updates via script or manually.
If I figure anything else out I will post it. But at least now the problem is gone.

May 3rd
So first and foremost here is the link to the update rom.
Wow, I am blown away by the update. It has everything i have been asking for. Here we go.
1. Email can be synced at 5 min intervals. Big improvement from 15.
2. You can search through your messages by typing on the message screen.
3. Dial by name or part of number. I love this.
4. Major Speed Improvement in IE. I see almost 250kbps now.
5. Word, Excel and Powerpoint client. Now with editing. It is ok but I prefer Wordpad.
6. Better memory management.
The phone looks great and acts wonderful. I just found what looks like an external antenna jack under the mirror on the back…
Anyone else seen that?
